Hair Loss On A Black Woman: Alopecia Areata (RESULTS)

24.02.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

Alopecia Areata is an extremely common condition and will affect 1% to 2% of the population at some point in their lives.  Most sufferers are children and young adults (below 40 years old), though it can affect people of all ages.  The hair loss is sudden and manifests itself in small, smooth-skinned patches that are likely to gradually widen with time.  It can also affect the sufferers nails, giving them a pitted, ridged or brittle appearance.  The exact cause is still unknown, although current theories include an auto-immune disease, stress or suggest a genetic basis.

To treat this young womans hair loss our trichologist Gary Heron recommended an intensive 12-month treatment course of:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser

vitastim
This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair.  It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth.  It also contains a multi-vitamin complex to help catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerate growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.
Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.
Please note: As vasodilators are designed to dilate the capillary blood vessels the scalp may redden on the area where the stimulant is applied and may also tingle slightly for a while.

Follicle Builder 15% Hair Strengthener

follicle
This stimulant is formulated to increase cell metabolism and nutrient concentration at the hair root to increase hair cell production.  It also has the effect of extending the hair growth cycle, improving overall hair density.
Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.

No.3 Shampoo

sw3
This luxurious shampoo is a rich blend of evening primrose, honey, and wheat protein, combined to clean hair thoroughly and gently, removing the excess oil from the scalp without stripping it of the important oil within the scalp tissues.  This ensures that the scalp is clean, healthy and in perfect balance, and that the hair is in excellent condition.
Directions for Use: Wet hair thoroughly, rub shampoo between palms of hands and apply to hair.  Rinse well, repeat if necessary.

No.5 Conditioner

sw5
This is a rich, reconditioning treatment that is excellent on dry, dull, fragile hair, which tends to break easily.  It is designed to penetrate deep into the hair structure to moisturise and condition the hair at micro cellular level rather than just treating the surface of the hair.  It contains jojoba and evening primrose oils, glycerine and wheat protein, which help to reform broken bonds in the hair giving it more strength and elasticity.
Directions for Use: After shampooing, spread the conditioner over the hair, gently working it through.  Leave on for 20-30 minutes and then rinse well.

Subject: Pityrisis Amiantacee of scalp

20.02.2009 in Uncategorized

“I have seen a dermatologist who has given me a cream and gel prescription but I forgot to ask about shampoo.  What shampoo would you recommend for the above condition.  How long will I have this and is it contagious ? Hope you can give me some help.”
Thank you
Mrs M Wright

Dear Mrs Wright

Thank you for your enquiry.

Pityriasis amiantacea begins with a swollen, discoloured and weeping scalp, which causes the hairs to stick to each other and to the scalp.  Following the first stage, the scalp begins to produce a thick layer of silvery white or dull gray scales that pile up along the hair shafts.  Although the patches may often be found next to a hair part, the back of the head is a common site.  Rather than spreading to the rest of the scalp, a fine, branny scale appears over the unaffected area.

Without treatment, this condition can also lead to diffuse hair loss as the inflammation of the scalp leads to production of superoxide, which causes hair shedding.  Though your hair will regrow, it may not be as thick as it was before.

When you visit the practice you will be seen by an experienced trichologist who will examine your hair and scalp closely and check through your medical history thoroughly.  Once the diagnosis has been made, if treatment is recommended, we will be able to provide you with the most effective and up-to-date trichological medication for home use.

All treatments products supplied are formulated especially for the Hair Centre by leading trichologists and chemists.  They have undergone exhaustive clinical trials and testing to ensure we can target disorders of the hair and scalp effectively.  All ingredients are extensively researched and meticulously sourced to make sure that these products are of the highest standard.

To find us from Victoria station is about a 10-minute walk.  Take the exit out of the station onto Victoria Street and turn right towards Westminster.  Walk up Victoria Street for about 5-6 minutes until the House of Fraser department store is on your right.  After the House of Fraser, turn right onto Artillery Row at its side, which joins Greycoat Place shortly.  You will find us at number 10 in front of the mini roundabout.

We are open for appointments Mondays to Fridays 10-am – 6pm.

We look forward to seeing you in the practice soon.

Yours sincerely

"I have had severe hair loss over the year's. I take thyroid hormones and have psoriasis. What can I do?

20.02.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

 Dear Catherine

Thank you for your enquiry,

Psoriasis is characterised by the presence of red, raised patches covered by silvery-white scales, which is caused by an abnormally fast cell division rate in the epidermis layer of the skin and is a genetically determined disorder.  This condition often leads to increased shedding of hairs in the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle and some reduction in hair density.

psoriasis

To treat this condition, we would recommend an intensive 12-month treatment course of:

PSORIADERM

Description: A powerful keratolytic (scale-removing) agent with anti-pruritic and antiseptic properties for cases of heavy scaling and erythema.

Contents: Aqua, Isopropyl Alcohol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Isopropyl Myristate, Juniperus Oxycedrus, Salicylic Acid, Hamamelis Virginiana, Glycerin, Menthol, Melaleuca Alternifolia, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Panthenol, Linoleic Acid, Retinyl Palmitate, Tocopherol, Linolenic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, PABA, CI 17200, CI 18140, CI 42090.

Mode of Action: Psoriaderm contains keratolytic agents to soften and remove compacted scaling from the skin.  Anti-pruritic agents reduce the irritation and erythema and antiseptic agents prevent secondary infection.  Psoriaderm contains additional cooling and emollient properties.

Directions for Use:
1)    Draw 1ml into the syringe and apply to the top area of your scalp twice a day.  The hair should be dry or at least towel-dried to ensure the lotion is not diluted.
2)    Massage the scalp gently until the lotion is absorbed and then leave on until your hair is next washed.  Wash your hands afterwards.

We hope this covers everything, but please do not hesitate to contact us if you are unsure of anything or require further advice regarding the treatment recommended for you.

Understanding and treating hair loss

17.02.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Hair loss is a well-known side-effect of cancer therapy and around half of women lose more hair than usual after giving birth.

However, there are conditions where the hair loss can be permanent that are less well known or understood. The most common alopecia conditions in women include:

Telogen effluvium: General shedding and thinning of the hair. This usually occurs a few months after a shock to the system, such as extreme stress, fever, childbirth, sudden weight loss, an operation or as a reaction to medication. The hair loss is usually temporary.

Alopecia areata: Affects about one in 100 people, mostly teenagers and young adults. Symptoms include patchy hair loss. This condition is linked to a problem with the immune system. The hair follicles are not permanently damaged, and in many of these cases the hair grows back in a few months.

One proven treatment for female-pattern baldness is Minoxidil. This is a lotion that you rub on your scalp every day.

Most users see improvements, including a halt to the balding, or slowing down, as well as thicker hair. Up to 25 percent of women experience hair regrowth.

Other solutions include wigs, hair transplants (taking hair from the sides and back of the head) and plastic surgery (such as scalp reduction, where the bald area is removed and the bit with hair on is stretched forward).

There is no effective treatment for alopecia areata. Some treatments can encourage hair to grow, such as steroid injections or creams, or Minoxidil lotion. In 60 percent to 80 percent of cases, the hair grows back after about a year without any treatment.

There is another treatment, called Finasteride, available only for men. This is taken in tablet form. It works by preventing the hormone testosterone being converted to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

About 80 percent of men who take Finasteride see improvements. Side effects are uncommon, although about two per cent of users experience loss of sex drive.
