Trichotillomania: Pulling your hair out

15.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Two to four percent of the population has trichotillomania, which is the urge to pull hair from your own body. It can be a small thing, like plucking at your beard while thinking. Or a huge thing, like pulling out all of the hair on your head.

trichotillomania-1

Why do people do this?

For some it causes pleasure, for others guilt. For many, it’s similar to the sensation of cutting, with pain and pleasure mixed.

trichotillomania-2

Recurrent pulling out of one’s hair resulting in noticeable hair loss.  An increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior. Pleasure, gratification, or relief when pulling out the hair. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupation, or other important areas of functioning.

trichotillomania

It’s an impulse-control disorder, similar to other obsessions or compulsions.

The term trichotillomania comes from the Greek, meaning “hair pull frenzy.”

Some medication may be helpful, but the most effective treatment is behavior therapy.

Do you know of anyone struggling with this disorder?

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Gary Heron says: “You’ll have access to the most effective treatments available through The Hair Centre and at a fraction of the cost of going to other Private Commercial Clinics and Centres.”

When it’s time to see the Trichologist: If you begin losing hair rapidly, and or are cosmetically concerned about baldness, consult your Trichologist about treatment options. You can receive a free hair loss consultation with a Westminster Trichologist at our Hair Centre.

The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.

Male Pattern Baldness Treatments. What Works?

13.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

In the past decade, medicine has made tremendous strides in the treatment of men’s hair loss. With the advent of 5-alpha-reductace inhibitors such as The Hair Centre’s Vitastim and Biostim range the evolution contiunes, living with noticeable hair loss is no longer inevitable. For the first time in the history it is now possible to stop or slow the progression of hair loss and to replace lost hair through treatments with completely natural results.

However, with that said, the vast majority of hair loss treatments being marketed today are still nothing but “snake oils.”

You may have seen the ads in the back of men’s magazines, you’ve heard the commercials on the radio, and you’ve seen the infomercials promoting miracle treatments for hair loss. The bottom line is that most advertised “treatments” do not work for the prevention and treatment of hair loss. If a hair loss treatment is not approved by a Westminster Trichologist, chances are you are wasting your time and money.

Remember that successful treatment of hair loss is greatly dependent on early intervention. It is critical to begin treatment with an effective product as soon as you notice the onset of hair loss.

The following two treatments Vitastim and Biostim [ Results shown above] have been clinically proven to successfully treat hair loss in men to varying degrees.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Gray hair hasn't been linked to nutritional deficiency

09.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

What causes gray hair?

h-mirrenr-gere

Is there some vitamin or mineral missing in the diet?

Not too long ago, calcium deficiency was strongly suspected as a cause of gray hair. In fact, researchers thought gray hair might even be a marker for osteoporosis. But the theory didn’t hold up; a good study of women with prematurely gray hair found no signs of bone loss. So far, nobody’s been able to find other nutritional links for silvery locks.

So why does it happen?

European scientists recently found that the hydrogen peroxide naturally found in your body (the same stuff that turns brunettes into bleach-bottle blondes) may eventually build up in your hair follicles and block pigment production in your hair, so it literally bleaches itself. It’s possible that faulty stem cells are to blame for this, and no doubt genetic programming plays a role, too. But nobody has truly cracked the gray code. Some of our Chinese friends swear by black sesame seeds (with seasonings in the grocery store) to keep black hairs from graying. Anecdotal reports are strong, but controlled trials are lacking. We bought some, though, and eat them because, no matter what, they taste good.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Steroid Abuse Leads To Alarming Rise In Hair Loss Victims

09.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE, MALE HAIR LOSS

Men are being warned that steroids can lead to premature baldness after a leading hair clinic reported an alarming rise in the number of patients affected by the designer drugs.

steroids

Optima Hair Specialists which supplies advanced hair replacement systems has seen a 60 per cent increase in enquiries from men who have taken anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and suffered early hair loss as a result.

AAS are believed to stimulate Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a powerful sex hormone that triggers baldness in men.

Peter Murtha, founder of Optima Hair Specialists, said: “It is widely accepted that DHT has an adverse affect on hair follicles and is the main culprit behind male pattern baldness. Recent studies have found that steroid drugs can increase the levels of DHT within the body and therefore accelerate hair loss.

“Alarmingly, we’ve seen a significant rise in enquiries from men who have taken steroids and subsequently suffered from premature baldness. I feel it’s crucial to warn others of the potential dangers, so they can avoid the side effects of AAS.”

Peter added: “If you have taken steroids and suffered premature baldness, all is not lost. There are treatments and solutions available to help you regain your head of hair and your confidence. At Optima, we provide a range of advanced hair replacement systems that tackle your hair loss, improve your appearance and boost your self-esteem.”

If you are thinking of using anabolic steroids to boost your muscles growth you should be aware of the consequences of your actions. The side effects of steroids are numerous and can be severe and you should not use anything unless your doctor has given to you. Be warned also that there are many fake and dangerously manufactured steroids sold on the black market which find their way into gyms and health shops.

SEVERE MALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS: WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM TREATMENT [ TREATMENT PHOTOS SHOWING EARLY RESULTS AFTER 3 MONTHS TREATMENT ]

07.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

MALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS or BALDNESS is characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead, known as “receding hairline”. Receding hairlines are usually seen in males above the ages of 20 but can be seen as early as late teens as well.

An additional bald patch may develop on top [ vertex ]. The trigger for this type of baldness [ called androgenetic alopecia ] is DHT, a powerful sex hormone, body, and facial hair growth promoter that can adversely affect the prostate as well as the hair located on the head.

The mechanism by which DHT accomplishes this is not yet fully understood. In genetically prone scalps, DHT initiates a process of follicular miniaturization. Through the process of follicular miniaturization, hair shaft width is progressively decreased until scalp hair resembles fragile vellus hair or “peach fluff” or else becomes non-existent. Onset of hair loss sometimes begins as early as end of puberty, and is mostly genetically determined. Male pattern baldness is classified on the Hamilton-Norwood scale I-VII. [ As shown below ].

norwood-hamilton-scale

It was previously believed that baldness was inherited from the maternal grandfather. While there is some basis for this belief, both parents contribute to their offspring’s likelihood of hair loss. Most likely, inheritance is technically “autosomal dominant with mixed penetrance”.
