I'm a women going bald

If you’re losing your hair, the solution might be to change your diet. Hair loss is especially difficult for women; in most cases, however, it’s resolvable.

Our hair density reduces naturally from its thickest point in our childhood and teens, while seasonal shedding means that we tend to lose hair in spring and early autumn. But if your hair is thinning beyond this, have it investigated. You don’t need to pay a trichologist or rely on hair-loss cure advertisements in magazines: your GP can conduct a series of blood tests to locate the problem.

There are two main causes: dietary and hormonal. Women who lose their hair have often been dieting and are short of nutrients. Iron is particularly important: anything that depletes it (lack of red meat in the diet, having a baby, fibroids) can lead to thinning. Asian women should note that chapatti flour can prevent nutrient absorption. Hair loss is more common after the menopause, while thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome, the contraceptive Pill and HRT can be a cause.

Seek medical advice. Your hair loss might indicate an underlying problem or be a side-effect of treatment for another condition. The solution might mean hormone tablets, a supplement, adjusting your diet or even a hair transplant — but there is always something that you can do.

I'm a woman and I'm losing my hair

What can you do if you’re a woman in your forties and your hair starts falling out? Dr Mark Porter

Q Is there anything that can be done to help women who are losing their hair? I’m in my forties and am a bit thin on top.

A The first step is to find a reversible cause for your hair loss. Iron deficiency and thyroid problems could be to blame. Telogen effluvium — where large numbers of hairs suddenly shift into the shedding phase — is another cause of thinning. Stress and severe illness can trigger this, but having a baby is the most common example.

Falling hormone levels after the birth mean that all the hairs that would have been shed during the previous nine months fall out at the same time. Fortunately, it is only temporary.

However, your loss is most likely to be due to androgenetic alopecia — an inherited hormone-related form of hair loss. Although widely known as male pattern baldness, the condition is also common in women, in whom it tends to cause a generalised thinning over the whole scalp, with as many as one woman in three in their thirties, forties and fifties affected to some degree.

There are possible treatments such as the anti-androgen cyproterone acetate and the lotion Regaine, which is available without prescription. Around half of all Regaine users can expect to see some improvement, but any extra hair growth tends to disappear if treatment is stopped.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Strain and stress that goes to the head

24.08.2009 in Uncategorized

When a doctor is consulted by a patient, especially a younger one, complaining of the sudden loss of hair, the most important part of the examination is taking the history.

In a young person the likely cause of patchy hair loss is alopecia areata, trichotillomania or the fracture of the hair shafts such as may be caused by braiding that has resulted in the hair being pulled to such an extent that it breaks off. Trichotillomania is the name given to the compulsion to play with the hair, often involving twisting and pulling, to such an extent that it comes out in chunks. It is a variation of the damage that can be done to hair by an over-zealous hairdresser braiding hair.

Alopecia areata is the term used to describe patches of baldness that can affect the hair of the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair. Any hair-bearing area can be affected by alopecia areata. It is often precipitated by stress but although the patient has no obvious other symptoms of skin or general disease, many doctors think that it is likely that the underlying cause is one of the autoimmune conditions. Complete recovery may occur and the prognosis is much better if the bald patches are confined to a smaller area. When it is severe and generalised, as in this case, the problem is less likely to clear up.

This would seem to be a classic case of severe alopecia areata. It could be that it was triggered by the stress of the hair braiding but it would not be the basic cause. This condition needs treatment with psychotherapy, sometimes helped by a mild anti-depressant.

Why Does Hair Turn Gray?

21.08.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Gray hair is a topic which attracts a lot of questions, especially from children. If you too are curious to know why does hair turn gray, read on to find out the answer. Although graying of hair is extremely common in middle-aged and elder people, some teenagers and youngsters also experience premature graying of hair. This often makes people wonder, “why does hair turn gray”? Well, let us look at certain hair color related basics before we move on to the answer to this question.

How Does Hair Get Its Color
Each strand of hair basically consists of two parts:
    * hair shaft
    * hair root.

The hair shaft is that part of the hair which is outside the scalp i.e., it is the part of the hair that we can see. The hair root on the other hand, is responsible for holding the hair shaft in place and is located below the surface of the scalp. If you pull out a hair from your scalp, you will see a small, almost negligible layer of white tissue at its base. That is known as the hair follicle. It contains a number of pigment cells known as melanocytes which produce a substance known as melanin. Melanin is what gives color to the hair. More the amount of melanin produced, darker is the color of the hair and vice-versa. When melanocytes start producing lesser and lesser melanin, that is when the color of the hair begins to lighten which in due course of time leads to gray hair.

Why Does Hair Turn Gray – Graying Secrets Revealed
Now that we know the biological principle behind graying of hair, let us have a look at the different factors that lead to graying.

Genetics: Genes play a major role in determining hair characteristics, hair growth and hair color. If either or both of your parents (or even your grandparents) developed gray hair at a relatively young age, there are chances that you too can meet with the same fate. In such cases, there is really nothing that you can do about it. You can only accept it as a part of life and move on.
Vitamin Deficiency: Graying of hair can happen if you have a severe deficiency of Vitamin B12. Other medical issues like anemia or thyroid problems are also known to result in graying of hair. Having a healthy diet is something that you can look at as a way of lessening this problem.
Chemicals: Over-exposure to harmful chemicals and pollutants can sometimes contribute towards graying of hair. At the same time, continuous use of strong shampoos, chemical hair dyes, hair colors and other hair care products may lead to premature hair graying.
Smoking: It has been medically proven that smoking has a direct impact on graying and hair loss. Tobacco, nicotine and other cigarette contents have adverse effects on the melanin-producing melanocytes which ultimately lead to graying of hair.
Stress-related Reasons: People who have extremely hectic lives and are constantly under stress are also prone to graying. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance, getting adequate rest and enough sleep can help in eliminating this problem.

Graying is something that happens to each and every person.

So What Triggers TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM Hair Loss?

20.08.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

hair-brush

Telogen effluvium
This condition occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal. Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins. When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is therefore diffuse thinning of the hair.

So What Triggers telogen effluvium?

Mentally

Psychological Stress

Bad news

Lost of relatives/loved ones

Excessive Travelling/Jet lag

Physically

Down with a medical condition

Surgery

Crash Diets

Hormonal problems

Post pregnancy

Menopause

Allergies

New medications

Accidents
