What Is Pityriasis Amiantacea? Do I Have It?

02.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Pityriasis amiantacea begins with a swollen, discoloured and weeping scalp, which causes the hairs to stick to each other and to the scalp. Following the first stage, the scalp begins to produce a thick layer of silvery white or dull gray scales that pile up along the hair shafts.  Although the patches may often be found next to a hair part, the back of the head is a common site.  Rather than spreading to the rest of the scalp, a fine, branny scale appears over the unaffected area.

My Story About My Alopecia Areata.

01.10.2007 in ALOPECIA AREATA, Uncategorized

At the beginning of this year I noticed a thinning of my hair and decided to visit my GP for some advice as to the problem. After several visits without success I asked to be referred to a trichologist for a second opinion. My GP said there was nothing he could do as it was a waste of time and money. After getting no further help from my GP I decided to get a second opinion for myself. I had heard about The Hair Centre on the radio and decided to go along for a consultation. I was diagnosed as suffering from Alopecia Areata and after speaking to a trichologist I felt much happier and relaxed knowing there was some treatment that could help me. At first I was a bit apprehensive and worried it was not going to work but after just 3 months of treatment I can see a very noticeable change of hair growth and the treatment has been very successful as it has stabilised the hair loss. I am currently using a maintenance shampoo recommended by The Hair Centre at home and I am very happy with the results and will continue to use it after the treatment has finished in three months’ time as it has put my hair in a much healthier condition.

Why Does Telogen Effluvium Happen?

01.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: As I have mentioned previously a stressful event like childbirth or surgery can interrupt and stop the growth of some of your hairs. It will mainly affect the older hairs which are coming to an end of their life cycle slightly earlier than usual  because of this condition. Normally the average life cycle of a coverage hair is about three years. This will increase the amount of hairs that you are due to shed and many more hairs than usual are then ready to fall out. It will take up to 3 months for the affected hairs to fall out after their growth has stopped. A short time later, new hairs then grow from the hair follicles as usual. In most cases your normal pattern and thickness of hair returns within a few months once these new hairs are fully established.

Persistent and excessive hair shedding may be caused by other factors such as an iron deficiency or an underactive thyroid gland. Your doctor can carry out a blood test to check for these if you have any other symptoms of these conditions.
