LONG TERM TELOGEN EFFLUVIUM

10.07.2008 in Uncategorized

ANAEMIA: Symptoms: paleness, tiredness, fainting, breathlessness.
Low  Serum ferritin levels / tissue iron stores
HYPOTHYROIDISM : Weight gain, lethargy, sensitivity to cold, dry skin, brittle hair and nails, loss of other body hair and slowness of speech.
HYPERTHYROIDISM: Weight loss with increased appetite, extreme nervousness, eyeball protrusion, oily skin, muscle weakness, fatigue and excessive sweating and constantly feeling warm.
DIABETES: Frequently need to urinate, tiredness, perpetual thirst.
STRESS: Which ever the original reason can be self perpetuating.

The above symptoms cause an interruption of the hair growth cycle. Hair grows for between three and seven years in the Anagen or Growing phase, it then shrinks away from the dermal papilla and enters the Catagen or Changing phase, which lasts two to three weeks. The hair then enters the Telogen or resting phase which lasts for between two to four months.  Two to four months is the time lapse between the symptom or cause and the hair fall.  Normally ten percent of scalp hairs are in the Telogen or resting phase, but they are staggered throughout the scalp, mosaic pattern. When the  growth cycle has been interrupted, forty to fifty percent of the total density can be lost over quite a short period of time.
The important thing to remember is that for every hair lost another will take its place.

ALOPECIA AREATA

10.07.2008 in ALOPECIA AREATA, Uncategorized

This describes the sudden appearance of a circumscribed totally bald patch, or patches. The diagnosis of this kind of hair loss is characteristic of the following signs. The follicles within the patch are visible. The skin in (Caucasians) is white. It appears very suddenly, sometimes preceded by itching. Around the periphery of the patch there are very short stumps of hair, these are called exclamation hairs and under the microscope show where the shaft of the hair has been weakened by Auto- immune dysfunction. These hairs also show the patch is extending. Regrowth  is  marked by vellus unpigmented hair usually growing from the centre. Areas on the scalp usually involved are: Occipital, ( nape of neck), Auricular (above the ears). Ophiasic (around the margins, recovery in this area is usually slower than auricular and occipital). Its course is extremely unpredictable, and intermittent relapses are common. Regrowth can occur within weeks or sometimes up to a year or so. Associated signs include sudden loss of pigment in a patch on the skin, this can happen anywhere on the body. Nail pitting is a common sign and the Atopic State -(Asthma, Hayfever, and Eczema). Is a common co factor.

AUTO IMMUNE MECHANISM and HAIR LOSS

09.07.2008 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

This is caused by, or associated with the development of an immune response to normal body tissues in which our white blood cells form antibodies which attack our tissue.  A possible defect may alter a person’s sensitivity and reactions to antibodies so that certain antibodies attack the hair follicles . The auto immune system does not recognise various components of its own body as self and attacks it as it would bacteria or any other foreign body.. e.g. include the following:

* ALOPECIA AREATA.  * VITILIGO. *PSEUDOPELADE. FOLLICULITIS DECALVINS.  *SCLERODERMA. *  LICHEN PLANUS.   * LUPUS.  *L,ERETHEMATOSIS.

Your immune system is constantly under attack by foreign invaders,(bacteria etc ).  One of their effects is the production of harmful free radicals. These are incomplete oxygen molecules with an imbalanced electrical charge.  In an attempt to restore the balance they attack cells, resulting in an impairment of function. Too many free radicals can weaken the immune system and pave the way for infection.

SOURCES OF FREE RADICALS

*Cigarette smoke * Sunlight * Exhaust fumes * Coffee *Chocolate, Tea. * Intense exercise *Pollution, *Fried, burnt, smoked or barbecued food.* Pesticides, *Emissions from printers Photocopiers, *Air conditioning units.

ANTIOXIDANTS, mop up Free Radicals, and boost the immune system. Sources include the following .

Vit A: carrots, watercress spinach, sweet potato, cabbage ,broccoli, and peppers.

Vit C: peppers, watercress, strawberries, kiwi fruit, radishes, oranges, tomatoes.

Vit E: Soya bean oil, asparagus, parsley, mung beans, almonds, and sesame seeds.

Selenium: U.K only.-  tuna fish, oysters, molasses, mushrooms, squash, Brazil nuts.

Zinc: oysters, wheatgerm, whole wheat, brown rice , green peas.
Beta Carotene: non toxic at high levels.

If you take vitamin C supplements  and  are on the pill, they should be taken at the opposite end of the day from the contraceptive pill as 500 mg or more  can increase the circulating oestrogen’s and turn a low dose pill into a high dose pill. The pill has a reducing effect on zinc. Zinc is absorbed in the presence of vitamin  B6.

Immune Supplement.

Imuno plus  to mop up free radicals. Support and enhance the immune system.

Female Hair Loss: Early Strengthening Of Hair In The First 4 to 5 Months Of Treatment

08.07.2008 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS, HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

This 26 year old woman came to us in the first week of February this year. She was suffering from Severe Female Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia).

Androgenetic alopecia in women is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills.  The hair loss is generally more uniform over the scalp than in the male counterpart, but also results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone.  The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

We prescribed the following treatments:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser: This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair. It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth. It also contains a multi-vitamin complex to help catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerate growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser: This stimulant contains a very effective natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

THIS COULD BE YOU IN 4 to 5 MONTHS

Charlotte is delighted with her early positive response. Her hair fall has all but stopped completely and has headed back to a normal regrowth cycle, and her irritation and scaly scalp are a thing of the past. She is now looking forward to further improvements and a good recovery over the next 6 to 12 months of ongoing treatments.
