Firms only mention US FDA approval when selling in the UK

2nd February 2010 — “LaserCombs” are a relatively new class of product designed to fight hair loss – combining a brush with a special light source. They’re sold online in the UK with the marketing information saying they are “FDA approved” – meaning the US health regulator has cleared them for use.

There’s no mention of them being UK approved, which is because they are not classed as health products here.

They are sold online in the UK for around £350, with promises of “increased hair growth, cessation of hair loss, faster growing hair, more manageability and more vibrant colour”.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) says the devices do not fall under its remit.

Jennifer Kyne from the MHRA told us by email, “Whether or not a specific product would be a medical device under Directive 93/42/EEC would depend on the claims being made for each individual product by its manufacturer. ’Hair loss’ or ‘balding’ is not regarded as being a medical condition and therefore products which claim to treat such problems will not be medical devices and would not require CE marking as such.”

“It should also be noted that the regulations in the USA are not the same as those in the EU and just because something has been FDA approved does not mean that it is a medical device under EU regulations.”

The Trading Standards Institute told us that because the devices are actually FDA approved, the marketing information is not misleading, as long as it is made clear this is a US clearance, and not a UK one.

Devices are safety approved
Randy Veliky, operations officer for Lexington International HairMax in the US which makes the LaserCombs told us, “We worked with regulatory consultants to pursue medical device clearance in the UK and other EU countries. We received the same response from the MHRA and others, that hair loss is just a sign of ageing,” so there was no need for medical device approval for cosmetic use.

However he points out, “The devices do have CE licences for laser and electrical safety.”

And he says they are “selling well” in the UK.

Many experts sceptical
Experts point out that it’s unclear how the comb actually works. This has led to scepticism about its effectiveness.

Rebecca Freeman, spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists told us by email, “Any type of hair loss can lead to self-esteem and confidence problems and many people, in a quest to regain hair growth or slow down hair loss, are being sold ineffective treatments. It is important for hair loss sufferers to visit a dermatologist to discuss all their treatment options and to look at the research available about each product before deciding whether or not to buy into expensive treatments.”

Survey: Most think stress hair loss cause

03.02.2010 in HAIR LOSS HEALTH NEWS

Online survey

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J., Feb. 2 (UPI) — Forty percent of married Americans would rather their spouse be overweight than bald and 45 percent try to hide thinning hair, a U.S. survey indicates.

The survey of 1,001 U.S. adults, conducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Rogaine, an over-the-counter brand-name version of minoxidil made by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary McNeil-PPC Inc. that promotes hair regrowth, also says 57 percent say they are not physically attracted to people with thinning hair.

75 percent of Americans incorrectly cite stress as a leading cause of hair loss, while 35 percent say frequently wearing a hat thins hair and 24 percent blame over-styling of hair.

“What people don’t always know is that hereditary hair loss accounts for 95 percent of all hair loss, and can affect men as early as their late teens and early 20s,” Dr. Robert Leonard, founder and chief surgeon of Leonard Hair Transplant Associates and member of the board of governors for the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, said in a statement. “By age 40, approximately 40 percent of women will experience some degree of thinning hair.”

Unfortunately most don’t realize their hair is thinning until they have lost 50 percent of it, but it’s easier to keep the hair you have than to restore what you have lost, Leonard adds.

The online — by invitation — survey was conducted Nov. 12-17 and has a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points.

Female hair loss: Telogen effluvium. What is it?

02.02.2010 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

confused woman

Female hair loss. We all know what alopecia is. But what is telogen effluvium? No explanation is normally given, and no treatment is suggested. Is there a treatment and do I need treatment?

Hair growth has three different stages. Hair in its growth stage is called the anagen phase. This lasts between 2 and 6 years. A women with a long anagen phase have the longest hair. 90% to 95 % of hair is in this stage at any one time.

The catagen phase is a very short stage. It is the stage between anagen and telogen.

The telogen phase is a resting phase, when the hair growth stops. 5% to 10% of hair is in this stage at any given time. In the telogen phase, the hair follicle shrinks away from the hair, and hair falls out, this is a natural process. About 120 hairs a day are lost. This is normal hair loss. The telogen phase lasts 2 to 3 months at a time, and then the lost hair is replaced by new baby hair, called vellus hair.

A telogen effluvium is an abnormal number of hairs that have prematurely entered the telogen phase and fallen out. It lasts 6 or fewer months. Stressful event precedes this phenomenon, and the stress can be either mental or physical. Surgery,a yoyo diet and the birth of a child are examples of physical stresses that usher in a telogen effluvium.

The prognosis of a telogen effluvium is good. The hair grows back with treatment.

Check with a Westminster Trichologist to see if treatment is needed inyour particular case.

Stress and diets can cause hair loss

02.02.2010 in TRICHOLOGIST

Old wives tale: Worry will make you lose your hair?  Ture or false?

We lose about 100 to 120 hairs a day. Sudden changes like yoyo dieting and stress can lead to temporary and permanent hair loss.

The world of Cinema and Music with its stars have raised the standard for hair BIG HAIR but to maintain those long lustrous locks you have got to eat correctly.

Fad and crash diets and cleansing diets are all robbing your body of the natural nutrients you need and can lead to hair loss. This will cause your hair follicles to go into a resting phase and in turn the natural progression then is that they would fall out and shed dramatically. Too much stress in your life will cause you to see more hair clogging up the shower drain. You may be suffereing from physical stress or it could be emotional stress. Even the climate with these all to common extreme weather changes can play there part on your premature hair loss.

Of course when you’re stressed you use medication, tagamet causes hair loss, there is a lot of cholesterol lowering drugs are known to cause hair loss. The worrying thing is these can all be bought over the counter. Many of these drugs say that hair loss is a side effect when using them, so make sure you read the warning label and information provided in the packet.

How do you I know if I am losing hair?

Do a Trichological test. Try the pull test. Take a couple small group of hairs and then just pull very lightly. If none come out your fine. If you get more than five hairs then that would be abnormal. Next step is to see a Westminster Trichologist.

You will probably have to lose at least 25% of your hair before you see any change in your overal appearance cosmetically. When your hair falls out there is a rest phase of between 3 to 6 months and then it can take up to another six months for your hair to grow back to where was before you had a problem.

It is very important not to just leave this problem and think that you know best so seek advice immediately if you are even slightly concerned. You don’t want it to go on for more than six months or it could lead to permanent hair loss, and this must be avoided at all costs.
