Stress can induce hair loss in women.

20.08.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin reportedly suffered from stress-related hair loss.

260xstory

The New York Times recently reported that former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s hair was thinning as a result of extreme stress. If so, doctors say, she’s not the only one.

Dermatologists say that although life’s normal ups and downs aren’t enough to precipitate it, women can lose up to 50 percent of their hair after an unusually stressful event — from childbirth to surgery to death in the family, said Dallas dermatologist Rebecca Euwer.

“When someone comes in and says they’re losing their hair, you ask, ‘Well, what happened about three months ago?’ ” Euwer said.

This type of hair loss can occur both in men and women. But most of the known cases are reported by women.

Euwer said that hair goes through three phases: growing, resting and falling out.

About 90 percent of hair is in the growing phase. Most of the remaining hair is in the resting phase, where it remains for about three months. When people suffer trauma, it can shock hair follicles into a resting phase — and about three months later they fall out.

The good news is, it will usually grow back on its own.

However, if it’s the hair on top of your head that’s falling out, that could be the female equivalent of male-pattern baldness. If it is stress-related, the sides and back of the scalp also will be affected.

Treatment is the answer, whether the hair thinning is from stress or natural aging.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Gary Heron says: “You’ll have access to the most effective treatments available through The Hair Centre and at a fraction of the cost of going to other Private Commercial Clinics and Centres.”

When it’s time to see the Trichologist: If you begin losing hair rapidly, and or are cosmetically concerned about baldness, consult your Trichologist about treatment options. You can receive a free hair loss consultation with a Westminster Trichologist at our Hair Centre.

The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.

What is Trichology? What is a Trichologist? Where can I find a Trichologist?

20.08.2009 in TRICHOLOGIST

If you have a problem with your hair or scalp the specialist to see is a Westminster Trichologist in the same way you would see a dermatologist for a skin problem. A Westminster Trichologist can treat male and female hair loss, baldness, scaling of the scalp, itching, hair breakage, dryness and oiliness amongst other things.

What to expect from a consultation with a Westminster Trichologist

Hair is a very sensitive “barometer” to imbalances in the body: Factors such as poor nutrition, medical or genetic problems, medication and stress can adversely affect their hair and scalp. During a consultation with a Westminster Trichologist expect to be asked to give a thorough medical history. You may even be asked to go for a blood test. All this information will enable the Westminster Trichologist, in most cases, to identify the cause of your problem and where possible, treat it.

Sciene and Nature Working Together

The distinct advantage trichology enjoys compared to other health related fields is that it bridges the gap between conventional and complimentary or natural medicine. This gives the Westminster Trichologist the scope and flexibility to select the most appropriate treatment without being constrained by the limitations of any one discipline.

There are natural alternatives to prescription drugs for treating conditions such as menopause, male and female hair loss, alopecia areata and psoriasis. These natural products have been shown to be as effective, safer and more economical in clinical trials than their synthetic counterparts.

However, where a Westminster Trichologist suspects medical conditions are the cause of excessive hair loss or any other problem you will be referred to a medical practitioner for assessment.

The importance of our hair and scalp condition to the overall way we feel and our general well being is often not recognised and or dismissed by medical practioners as unimportant. That’s where the expertise of  a Westminster Trichologist fills a much-needed void.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

FOLLICULTIS DECALVANS TREATED [ BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS ]

19.08.2009 in FOLLICULTIS DECALVANS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

Folliculitis Decalvans is a slowly spreading inflammation of the hair follicle, which leads to progressive scarring. It is distinguished by follicular plugging and multiple rounded or oval patches can be found on the scalp, each surrounded by crops of follicular pustules. There may be no other changes, but successive crops of pustules, each followed by the destruction of the affected follicles, produce the slow extension of the alopecia. The exact cause of this condition is still uncertain, but is most likely an abnormal ‘host response’ to various common bacteria.

Prenatal vitamins for hair and nails: Helpful or harmful?

19.08.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

LA Health and Beauty Examiner Sarah Torribio

hair-101

Question:

“I’ve heard that prenatal vitamins are a great way to get stronger hair and nails. Is this true? Also, is it safe to take them if I’m not having a baby, and don’t plan to become pregnant?”

Answer:

The old wives’ tale is that your nails and hair will grow faster if you take prenatal vitamins.

Actually, there is no scientific evidence linking the consumption of prenatal vitamins with faster hair and nail growth.

Scientists don’t know everything, though. After all, despite the fact that we’ve almost reached the space age-sounding year of 2010, no one has found a cure for baldness or the common cold.

Anecdotal evidence abounds as to the vitamins’ efficacy. Nearly everyone you ask seems to have a story about it. I’m no exception.

A friend of mine watched her hair grow several inches during her pregnancy. And while I didn’t have a follicular growth spurt, when I was pregnant with my now 8-month-old son, my nails were tough as . . .well . . . nails. I think it was the vitamins.

All of this talk is nothing new. A few years back, however, web searches regarding the prenatal vitamin/hair-and-nails link spiked after a 2006 Harper’s Bazaar interview with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, in which she was asked what beauty tips she plans to pass onto her daughter Apple.

gwyneth_paltrow_300x400

Along with touting H2O, sunscreen and fresh organic food, she shared the secret to her lovely flaxen locks, which at the time flowed past her bra strap. She credited prenatal vitamins.

“It doesn’t matter if you are pregnant, I swear to God,” Paltrow told Harper’s. “I have double-processed blond hair, and it’s so long and not damaged. Those vitamins, they are the trick!”

If Gwyneth and the word on the street are right, what’s the secret to this mane magic?

It may not be any particular component of prenatal vitamins, but instead a happy side-effect of consistently using any comprehensive multivitamin.

Perhaps prenatal vitamins seem better at nurturing hair and nail growth than regular multivitamins because expectant mothers —and those hoping to rid themselves of tress distress and the broken-nail blues—are so conscientious about popping the daily supplements.

For instance, I am very spotty about taking vitamins in general. I tend to get on a healthy kick, do well at taking a daily multivitamin for a couple of weeks, and then forget about it. While I was pregnant, however, I never missed a dose. After all, I had the ultimate incentive: a healthy baby.

My prenatal vitamin-consuming regularity could be the secret to my Herculean nails.
