Thyroid Gland Triggers Post-Delivery Hair Loss

26.05.2010 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, HAIR LOSS HEALTH NEWS

Healthcare researchers have found that the cause behind women suffering hair loss after the delivery of their children is the presence of a tiny butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the throat. This gland is responsible for the majority of metabolism in the body.

Thyroid-Gland

When this gland gets twisted, it gives way to a number of problems. In case of severe hair fall post-delivery, hyperthyroidism occurs within the body of a female, which is resultant of excessive pressure imposed on the glands in producing the hormones, which in turn speeds up the metabolism.

According to Dr. Roland Chieng, a consultant at Roland Chieng Fertility and Women Care, hyperthyroidism is caused by Graves’ disease in 95% of the women. The disease weakens the defence system of the body. The defence system attacks the thyroid, forcing it to secrete excessive hormones.

These conditions lead to complications, including heart attacks.

On the other end of band of thyroid dysfunction lies hypothyroidism, which takes place when the thyroid doesn’t secrete sufficient hormones and a sloth hits the metabolism.

Dr. Chia Su-Ynn, a consultant endocrinologist and physician at The Endocrine Clinic, said that there is a lack of awareness on the types of thyroid disorders.

“The symptoms may be mistaken for a lot of other conditions like obesity, depression, anxiety or other stress-related symptoms,” she said.

Hair relaxers can cause baldness

26.05.2010 in BLACK AFRO-CARIBBEAN HAIR LOSS

Research reveals hair-raising findings

small36

A NEW medical research report from the University of Cape Town says using hair relaxers on children and younger women can lead to total baldness.

Dermatologist Nhlanhla Khumalo, who works at the university and at Groote Schuur Hospital, found that chemical relaxers cause irreversible damage to the scalp.

NEW KNOWLEDGE: Research has found that chemical relaxers cause irreversible damage to the scalp.

Khumalo published her research in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology last month.

She wrote that “the link between relaxers and hair loss was becoming clearer”. The highest risk of hair loss happens when hairstyles and braids are done on relaxed hair.

Based on a study of school girls and young women in Langa, Cape Town, Khumalo’s research found that up to 70percent of schoolgirls and adults were using hair relaxers to straighten their hair.

“For black African women, the most worrying cause of hair loss is traction alopecia (TA) – the loss of hair which is most common in the hairline as a result of pulling hair into a tight pony tail, braids and weaves,” she said.

The highest risk occurs when the hairstyles are done on relaxed hair which is already soft, she said.

Hair relaxers change the level of cystine – a protein responsible for strengthening the hair.

“The end result is that the hair is fragile and brittle compared to the original unrelaxed hair,” Khumalo said.

She said adding hairstyles like braids and extensions onto the hair puts pressure on the relaxed hair, which results in hair breaking or falling out.

Lucy Mibey, hairdresser and owner of Braids Sensation Hair and Beauty Salon in Mowbray, Cape Town, said “the problem is that the majority of African black people have no proper knowledge and education about hair grooming”.

Mibey said many people who had lost their hair had passed through the doors of her salon and that even dermatologists had not been able to help some of them, she said.

“The hair products industry is a booming one, and unfortunately quality hair products and relaxers are expensive and many people cannot afford them.”

In her opinion, many hairdressers have “no knowledge at all” about the dangers of chemical hair products.

Khumalo said: “If you do use hair relaxers, stay away from braids and extensions which will add more weight to the hair – or else go natural.”

More women are getting disorders traditionally thought of as 'men's' diseases

12.05.2010 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

Women in high-pressure jobs face more stress, exhaustion, and even some illnesses.

Once considered “men’s” diseases, gout, heart attacks and lung cancer now are sickening women, too.

Experts partially blame the exhaustion that comes with stressful jobs, according to the Daily Mail. Women working in high-pressure jobs are twice as likely to have cardiovascular disease as other women, and women under 50 run the highest risk, according to a Danish study.

Out-of-control eating and drinking too much can contribute to certain illnesses, too.

“People who are stressed are more likely to drink too much, to smoke, to eat junk food and to avoid exercise,” Fotini Rozakeas, a British Heart Foundation cardiac nurse, told the Daily Mail.

Traditionally, heart disease may have been a man’s disease, says Dr. Holly Andersen at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, but more women die from it.

“In reality, more women have died of heart disease every year than men since 1984 in this country,” she says. “Women develop heart disease about a decade later than men. They also are more likely to die. They are treated much less aggressively than men.”

Deaths due to heart disease are on the increase in women age 35 to 44 – the only group that’s facing increasing rates of death from heart disease, Andersen says.

Heart disease isn’t the only disorder that’s becoming a woman’s ailment. Receding hairlines and thinning hair are becoming more prevalent in women as well, according to hair transplant surgeon Dr. Peter Williams. He said stress and low estrogen could be causing hair problems. And an emerging form of hair loss, in which the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles and causes hair loss from the hairline and the eyebrows, also is turning up in women.

Gout traditionally affects nine times as many men as women, but cases in women have doubled since the 1970s, according to the Daily Mail. The painful condition, which appears when uric acid crystals build up in the joints, is believed to be triggered at least in part by consuming rich food.

“One reason women are more prone to gout is that they are living longer,” rheumatologist and UK Gout Society trustee told the Daily Mail. “Women are also drinking more, eating more and are more prone to obesity and diabetes, all of which raise the risk of gout.”

Other disorders becoming more common in women? Lowered libido, lung cancer and liver disease, according to the Daily Mail.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health, and smoking causes the majority of cases. Smoking causes 90 percent of the lung cancer deaths in the U.S. among men and about 80 percent of lung cancer deaths among women, according to the NIH.
