Paralympic athlete blames positive drug test on hair-loss treatment

10.09.2008 in TRICHOLOGIST

A German wheelchair basketball player has blamed a positive drug test on the treatment he was taking for hair loss after he was thrown out of the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

A statement from the German National Paralympic Committee said Ahmet Coskun had tested positive for finasteride, a drug used to treat hair loss but which can also mask other banned substances, after a pre-competition urine test on Aug 23.

“I was thinking about my hair and had no idea that the drug contained a banned substance. I’m very upset. I never intended to do doping,” Coskun said.

German chef de mission Karl Quade expressed regret at the news. “We take the issue of anti-doping very seriously. We’ve been carrying out an intensive anti-doping campaign for years in cooperation with NADA (the German anti-doping agency),” he said in a statement.

Coskun, 33, who played for Germany in three of their pool matches but not in Wednesday’s 73-63 win over Iran, will return home soon, German paralympic chiefs said.

Coskun was the second athlete to have tested positive at the Games. Pakistani powerlifter Naveed Ahmed Butt, 37, tested positive for the steroid methandienone metabolites on Sept 4, two days before the opening ceremony.

FEMALE HAIR LOSS: WHAT THE PATIENTS SAY

09.09.2008 in HAIR LOSS CLINIC REVIEWED, TRICHOLOGIST

Dear Gary,

Thank you for your email which I received yesterday. I am pleased to tell you that the treatment I had with you has worked very well and my hair is still growing as it should. I have experienced no adverse effects or problems so feel an appointment would be unnecessary. However, if I did ever experience problems again I hope that I would be able to come back and see you.
Kind regards,

Yours sincerely,
Julie Hedger

FEMALE HAIR LOSS RESULTS

05.09.2008 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS, HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

This 25 year old women started treatment with us in August 2007. She is diagnosed as suffering with Androgenetic Alopecia or Female Pattern Hair Baldness.

Androgenetic alopecia has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head.  This hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone.  The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be oversensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

Helene is using the prescribed treatments listed below:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser
This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair.  It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser
This stimulant contains a multi-vitamin complex to stimulate the hair follicles and increase hair cell production and proliferation.  It is also designed to prolong the hair growth cycle, promoting increased hair growth and density.

FEMALE HAIR LOSS: Poll reveals pregnancy side effects

02.09.2008 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

Pregnant women experience a range of potentially embarrassing health concerns, including hair loss, according to a poll.

Some are also confused about what about what to do if they suffer from hair loss.

The survey of 1,303 mothers and pregnant women found that almost half (42%) had experienced memory loss while 9% had suffered hair loss.

The survey, for the charity Tommy’s and Johnson’s Baby, also found that 45% of women had received conflicting advice about pregnancy.

Four in 10 (40%) were confused about what foods were safe to eat, 29% were unsure if they could dye their hair, 31% did not know which prescription drugs were safe to take and 22% were unaware of safe exercises.

A total of 15% were confused by how much alcohol, if any, they could drink while pregnant, 15% did not know if it was safe to fly.

One in 20 women (5%) did not understand why they needed to take folic acid in the first 12 weeks.

Overall, 34% of women felt embarrassed by elements of their pregnancy.
