Botox is a cure for baldness

BALDING Brits may be offered a cure for their thinning thatches – injections of Botox.

The toxic chemicals are generally used to smooth out wrinkles, but scientists have found they can cause hair to regrow.

The treatment was discovered by accident by a US plastic surgeon. Dr Simon Ourian was trying to cure headaches suffered by his cancer-victim mum after chemotherapy.

After injecting Botox into her scalp, he was stunned to see her hair regrow.

Baldness is caused by the hair follicles shrinking, so no new ones are produced. But Botox dilates the blood vessels, which allows nutrients to the hair shaft and stimulates new growth.

Dr Ourian has tested on volunteers for three years at his Beverly Hills practice. The treatment needs repeated injections, but he saw a “dramatic” difference after one session.

He said: “I was happily surprised. As hair loss is a significant source of insecurity, there was no shortage of volunteers.”

Botox is the medical name for botulinum toxin – a powerful natural poison. It was developed to stop eye muscle spasms but is commonly used as an anti-wrinkle treatment as it paralyses facial muscles.

Gary Heron says: “You’ll have access to the most effective treatments available through The Hair Centre and at a fraction of the cost of going to other Private Commercial Clinics and Centres.”

When it’s time to see the Trichologist: If you begin losing hair rapidly, and or are cosmetically concerned about baldness, consult your Trichologist about treatment options. You can receive a free hair loss consultation with a Westminster Trichologist at our Hair Centre.

The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.

Hair Loss Threat For Black Women

WEAVE: Improper removal methods can cause damage

BLACK WOMEN could be at risk of severe hair loss because many of them don’t know how to properly take out braids weave and other hair extensions, says a New York-based hair care company.

Sheila Smith, spokeswomen for hair care company Tangled Hair Techs, told Taylor Media Services: “As consumer demand for braids, dreadlocks and hair extensions has grown, clients have become less knowledgeable about proper removal processes.”

She said this lack of knowledge can lead to “serious damage, hair loss, and in some cases, severely tangled or matted hair.”

She added that some hairdressers also make the issue worse by using improper methods to remove hair.

Alopecia Areata: Do I Have It? How Do I Treat It?

23.06.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

The Causes

Alopecia areata is not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting that heredity may be a factor, and at least one of the genes involved has been mapped to chromosome 8p21-22. In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases.

14th-may-2008-3september-2008-8

The Condition

Is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth. There is evidence that T cell lymphocytes cluster around these follicles, causing inflammation and subsequent hair loss. An unknown environmental trigger such as emotional stress or a pathogen is thought to combine with hereditary factors to cause the condition. There are a few recorded cases of babies being born with congenital alopecia areata; however, these are not cases of autoimmune disease because an infant is born without a fully developed immune system.

Diagnosis

Alopecia areata first symptoms are small, soft, bald patches which can take just about any shape but are most usually round. It most often affects the scalp and beard but may occur on any hair-bearing part of the body. There may be different skin areas with hair loss and regrowth in the same body at the same time. It may also go into remission for a time, or permanently.

The area of hair loss may tingle or be very slightly painful.

The hair tends to fall out over a short period of time, with the loss commonly occurring more on one side of the scalp than the other.

Another presentation of the condition are exclamation point hairs. Exclamation mark hairs are hairs that become narrower along the length of the strand closer to the base, producing a characteristic “exclamation mark” appearance.

One diagnostic technique applied by medical professionals is to gently tug at a handful of hair along the edge of a patch with less strength than would be required to pull out healthy hair. In healthy hair, no hair should fall out or ripped hair should be distributed evenly across the tugged portion of the scalp. In cases of alopecia areata hair will tend to pull out easier along the edge of the patch where the follicles are already being attacked by the body’s immune system than away from the patch where they are still healthy. Professionals usually remind patients that the hair that is pulled out would eventually fall naturally. The test is conducted only once to identify the condition and rule out a simple localized hair loss condition.

Nails may have pitting or trachyonychia.

An Emotional Experience
The gradual or more sudden loss of hair can be a very emotional experience for any man. The effects of hair loss can cause irritation, anxiety or even suicidal depression. This is compounded by feelings of helplessness if there is no solution available.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
Here we show the effects that the male hormone DHT have on hair follicles.

In Fig1 a genetic time switch causes hair cells to become sensitive to DHT.

Fig 2 shows the deterioration of the hair follicles internal structure causing shedding of hair and baldness.

The stages of Male Pattern Baldness (MPB)
The reasons for MPB are attributed to the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone circulating in your body and the genetic sensitivity to that hormone.  At any time after the age of fifteen, DHT can turn on the genetic switch that causes hair loss to start.

STAGE 1 – Male Pattern Baldness

pix-1

The first tell tale signs of the onset of Male Pattern Baldness is when frontal recessions begin to appear in the hairline.

STAGE 2 – Male Pattern Baldness

 pix-2

Over time these recessions become larger and much more noticeable, and the hairline moves further back.

STAGE 3 – Male Pattern Baldness

pix3

At the same time as the recessions taking place, a thinning area may also appear on the crown and will gradually increase in size.

STAGE 4 – Male Pattern Baldness

pix-4

The final stage of Male Pattern Baldness is when the hair is lost completely from the crown and frontal region, and leaving the familiar horse shoe shape.

Male Hair Loss Products And Treatments [ PHOTOS OF RESULTS ]

18.06.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

For many men, losing hair is something will have to be faced as part of the aging process. Common hair loss can be treated with preventative hair loss treatments and products. Iif this is happening to you, you are not alone, as a simple walk down the street will show you. About 25 per cent of men begin losing hair before they reach 30 and two thirds before the age of 60. Sometimes men can begin losing hair in their teens and can reach their early twenties with very little, if any, hair left on the crown of their head. Usually, however, the hair loss is gradual, developing over a period of twenty to thirty years.

The most common cause of hair loss in men is genetic:

Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head. The hair above the ears and at the nape of the neck is unaffected. This hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be oversensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.
