What Is Trichorrhexis Nodosa? Do I Have It?

15.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Trichorrhexis Nodosa can be a genetic weakness within the hair shaft or weakness and breakage due to weathering i.e. over use of heat during the drying process or manual trauma due to tension on the hair from tight ponytail clasps, rollers (particularly velcro) or smoothing irons. Ultra violet light, central heating and the wind can all exacerbate this further and the condition will become progressive without correct treatment.

What Is Propecia? Does It Work?

11.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Propecia – The first FDA approved pill for hair loss. Propecia contains 1mg of Finasteride which inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase type 2 that converts testosterone into DHT. This lowering of DHT in the body leads to a halting of hair loss and causes regrowth of hair in people suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia.

How Does Minoxidil Work and is there an alternative?

Answer: Minoxidil (Regaine) is a slightly oily solution that is rubbed into the scalp twice a day, or as recommended by your dermatologist. In its oral or intravenous form, it is a potent anti-hypertensive medicine, used in emergencies to lower critical blood pressures. It was during this use that hair growth was noted in patients with hair loss. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown; most experts feel that it causes dilation of the blood vessels in the scalp and increased exposure of the hair follicle to this flow. It has been shown to work best on the top of the head and less well at the angles. Its predominant effect is to decrease loss and maintain existing growth.

We recommend the use of Vitastim and if necessary Biostim as well, in all cases for best results.

What Is Androgenetic Alopecia? Do I Have It?

10.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Androgenetic Alopecia in men has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head. This hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

This condition affects both men and women alike.

What Is Traction Alopecia? Do I Have It?

10.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Traction Alopecia is hair loss caused by constant tension on the hair, such as that created by an over-tight ponytail, plaiting or through using too tight rollers to style the hair. The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer and permanently damaged if not treated.
