Understanding dandruff and hair loss due to breakage with the head&shoulders team of experts.

17.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

To gather the latest knowledge and expert opinions on the topic of dandruff and hair quality, a scientific colloquium was held in Genoa on 3rd July 2008.

Various sets of data and academic hypotheses now exist on how the presence of micro-organisms and dandruff on the scalp may be linked to hair quality.

Therefore, the aim of the colloquium was to discuss the existing knowledge and most likely hypotheses with the global leading hair experts to develop a model for a possible connection of the phenomena observed on the scalp, in the follicle, and in the hair fibre.

Colloquium Discussion

The colloquium was kicked off with a general introduction followed by a short overview of the existing data and hypotheses concerning the overall topic. The following discussion of the expert members centred around the key areas: the role of micro-organisms in the quality of hair, irritation of the scalp skin and its link to dandruff, irritation as a factor determining hair quality, impact of irritation on hair integrity, and possible treatment options that enhance the scalp health and the quality of hair.

The 4 Main Causes of Hair Loss

17.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

The precise conditions that produce hair loss typically have deeper causes. Science has revealed 4 factors to be especially important:

Genetic factors
As announced in 2008, scientists at Bonn and Düsseldorf Universities have discovered an important genetic variation leading to hair loss. Researchers investigated more than 500,000 positions in the human genome, establishing a gene variant which clearly occurs more frequently in men who are bald than in others. The breakthrough may help explain similarities in cranial hair growth between fathers and sons.
This work builds on that in 2005, which identified a separate hair loss gene inherited through the maternal line, explaining why hair loss in men often imitates that of their maternal grandfathers.

Hormonal factors
Imbalances in the male and female hormones that your body naturally produces may be a factor. Likewise, an overactive or underactive thyroid gland can lead to hair loss. Correcting such imbalances may stop your hair loss.

Ageing
Losing some of your hair is a totally normal part of the ageing process. Called androgenetic alopecia, this accounts for around 95% of all hair loss. Women usually experience the condition as an even loss of hair over the entire scalp, rather than areas of complete baldness.

Stress
Anxiety and other forms of stress can be major factors. For example, following a worrying illness or major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. Such symptoms are normally temporary and will reverse once you return to your normal state of mind.

Trichotillomania Is There An Answer?

16.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Trichotillomania is a compulsive urge to pull and/or twist of the hair until it breaks off, resulting in noticeable hair loss.  The hair may be lost in round patches or diffusely across the scalp.  It is a type of compulsive behaviour and its causes are not clearly understood, although symptoms usually begin before the age of 17, with women almost four times likely to be affected than men.  It may affect as much as 4% of the population.  The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer and permanently damaged if not treated.

Telogen Effluvium Is There An Answer?

16.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Telogen Effluvium occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal.  Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins.   When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is therefore diffuse thinning of the hair.
