What to do about hair loss by Dr Miriam Stoppard

27.01.2011 in HAIR LOSS HEALTH NEWS

Dr Miriam Stoppard, Daily Mirror 27/01/2011

One in four men go a bit thin on top in their 20s. If you’re one of them, it can be an embarrassing issue.

You may even be considering a treatment for male pattern baldness.

They range from camouflage sprays and drugs to full unit extraction, which involves the painful transplant of single hair follicles to your bald patch and costs anything from £7,000 to £10,000.

A number of celebrities have talked openly of their angst about hair loss, such as John Cleese and cricketers Shane Warne and Graham Gooch.

Actor James Nesbitt (above) had a transplant and said: “It’s changed my life. It’s horrible going bald. Anyone who says it isn’t is lying.”

Whatever stage you are at and whether you are someone who’s open about it or wants to run away and hide, there is good news.

It isn’t that you have lost all your hair follicles from your shiny pate – you have as many hair follicles as the guys with a full head of hair. They have simply gone to sleep.

Scientists think they have found a way of waking up the hair follicles. Wonder of wonders, they’re going to do it through tickling up follicle stem cells to change into progenitor cells, and these could start their hair growing again.

Research reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation has found that it is possible to switch on genes that will coax stem cells into forming new hair follicles.

We could actually be quite close to identifying treatments that could be topically applied to the scalp to convert stem cells into progenitor cells, which would make large areas of normal hair.

So while you’re waiting for a solution, why don’t you take a leaf out of the book of chef Heston Blumenthal and comedian Harry Hill, and just chill?

Sleep and Hair Loss: Is There a Connection?

26.01.2011 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

If your hair has been feeling a little thin lately, here’s something to consider: It might be connected to your sleep patterns.

Hair is very sensitive to changes in body function patterns like sleep, diet and hormones. Prolonged periods of sleep deprivation can manifest in your losing hair. Luckily, this is something that can potentially be reversed just by changing your habits. You should be getting 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

If, after changing your sleep habits, you find that you’re still experiencing hair loss, you should consult a professional who can analyze your blood and habits more adequately. Hair loss could be caused by other issues like sleep apnea or pattern baldness.

Protein deficiency may cause hair loss

18.01.2011 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Hair is made up of protein, so a protein deficiency may lead to hair loss. According to Harvard University, most Americans take in adequate protein; however, a deficiency can result from poor absorption. Pregnant women and those who are building muscle with weight training may need additional protein in their diets.

Hair Loss Causes
Hair loss can be caused by a wide variety of other nutritional and medical issues. Hormone problems can cause hair loss, as can deficiencies in numerous vitamins such as vitamin E, vitamin D or vitamin A. Hair loss can also be triggered by prescription drugs such as antibiotics and steroids. Some hair products will cause hair loss, too.

Protein Deficiency Symptoms
Protein deficiency can lead to hair loss or to dry and brittle hair. Anemia and immune suppression are also symptoms, as is depression.

Sources of Protein for Hair Growth
Protein is found in animal sources, such as fish, chicken, pork and turkey. Organic meats and non-farmed fish are advised, as toxins and hormones in conventionally raised animals or farm-raised fish add to the body’s toxic load. Vegetarian sources of protein are found in whole grains, beans, and nuts. Vegetable sources have the added benefit of containing fiber and many vitamins such as vitamin C and vitamin A, as well as antioxidants, which fight free radical damage. While animal proteins are loaded with fat and cholesterol, vegetable sources are low in fat and high in healthy oils, such as peanut oil or almond oil. Rice bran is another low-fat source of vegetable protein.

Nut Proteins Help Grow Hair
Nuts contain protein along with many other healthy nutrients. The Harvard School of Public Health has reported that people who eat nuts on a regular basis have fewer heart attacks. Research published in the Physicians’ Health Study demonstrated that eating a few servings of nuts each week can lower the risk of heart attacks or sudden cardiac deaths by 30 and 50 percent. Nuts contain unsaturated fats, which help lower cholesterol as well.

Aging and Hair Growth
Hair growth slows with aging, but adequate nutrition can contribute to maintaining healthy hair growth at any age.

Propecia Hair Loss Medication Could Cause Erection Difficulties

17.01.2011 in HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

TOLEDO, OHIO, Jan. 17, 2011 /NewsRelease/ – There are several reported unwanted effects of Propecia (the hair loss prevention drug), which (based on Merck’s website) include the following: allergy symptoms including rash, itching, hives, and swelling from the lips and face; issues with ejaculation; breast tenderness and enlargement; and testicular pain. Finasteride was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 as a prescription-only treatment for hair loss (MPB). This drug is manufactured through the NJ-based pharmaceutical provider Merck, and marketed worldwide under the trade name Propecia. Clinical trials have proved that Propecia is very efficient at stopping hair loss associated with male pattern baldness. In studies, 9 out of 10 men who took Propecia noticed hair thinning stop, plus some of them even reported regrowth of hair. (source: propecia.com)

Merck have recently, and after receiving several complaints from consumers, updated the drug’s label and added new warnings that Propecia may cause sexual unwanted effects. The noted sex-related unwanted effects contain decreased libido (sex drive), decrease in the quantity of semen, and erectile dysfunction. Merck also say that these side effects will go away after stopping the treatment, but do they really?
A recent news article published on BBC’s web site tells the story of James, a 26-year-old man from Edinburgh – UK, who began taking Propecia after noticing that his hair was continuously falling.
“I went online and researched it. I found out there was a drug called Propecia, and soon enough I started buying that and it worked a goody.” – James told BBC reporter Simon Mundie.
Before long of using Propecia James started experiencing less interest in sex. So, he stopped taking the drug thinking those side effects will diminish, but “things soon got worse” – he said.
“After about three weeks all hell broke loose. I more or less became totally impotent.”
So, James visited see a physician a couple of months later, who put him on testosterone therapy. On the other hand, that didn’t work for him and that he was left with only one choice: a penile implant.
There are doctors within the U.S. who declare that circumstances like James’s are common, and warn users that Propecia might have long-term sexual side effects.
Propecia just isn’t the only medication that could cause erection difficulties. There are lots of other FDA-approved treatments that may lead to erection dysfunction as a side-effect. These contain, but aren’t limited to, antidepressants (like Valium, Prozac, Ativan, yet others), antihistamine medications (like Tagamet, Zantac, yet others), high blood pressure drugs (like Inderal, Aldactone, and others), Parkinson’s disease medications, chemotherapy and hormonal medications, along with other medications. The ED and men’s health dedicated web-site BuyViagraPillsOnline.com follows all news and events that have to do with erectile dysfunction, and will maintain its users updated concerning the safety of Propecia and other drugs that could have sexual side effects.

VITASTIM

vitastim

Considerable empirical evidence has supported the oestrogen like activity of hop extract and recent scientific research has confirmed that hop extract shows a potent acceleration on hair growth in cases of androgenic alopecia.

BIOSTIM

biostim

Clinical trials of the natural ingredients have established anti-androgen activity and the ability to suppress di-hydroxy testosterone (DHT) formation, beneficial in cases of androgenic alopecia.  The increased dermal papilla activity increases hair cell production and proliferation, increases the number of hairs in the anagen phase and increases the A/T (anagen/telogen ration).

Vitastim and Biostim used together are proven treatments for both male and female-pattern baldness.

Most users see improvements, including a halt to the balding or slowing down of it, as well as thicker hair.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists.
