Emilienne Rebel’s Bold Beanies are designed and presented to look like gifts, including a bunch of flowers

A young mother who lost her hair while undergoing chemotherapy for cancer is up for a female inventor award after designing hats for other sufferers.

Emilienne Rebel, 33, from Wrexham, struggled to find comfortable head-wear after losing her hair, with scarves falling off and wigs being itchy.

She had the idea for cotton jersey hats – Bold Beanies – and has now been nominated for a British Female Inventor and Innovator of the Year award.

She is among 40 UK women shortlisted.

Ms Rebel, a mother-of-two who was diagnosed with cancer two years ago, said she came up with her idea as she wanted to make “a bad situation just a little bit more bearable”.

“My hair loss left me feeling very cold at night time – all I wanted was something comfortable and easy to keep my head warm,” she said.

With a small family running around I also needed something easy just to slip on around the house and get on with my day

“With a small family running around I also needed something easy just to slip on around the house and get on with my day.

“Scarves would slip and my wig was too itchy. I never found what I was looking for – the idea for Bold Beanies was born.”

Now fully recovered – and despite being busy looking after her two young daughters – Ms Rebel decided to fill that gap in the market.

She launched Bold Beanies a few months ago and the range of simple cotton jersey hats are now sold on the internet.

Designed and presented as gifts, the hats are rolled to look like roses while beanie hats for youngsters are presented to look like lollipops.

Ms Rebel has been shortlisted in the Exceptionally Creative – Textile & Fashion/ Health category of the awards.

Botox is a cure for baldness

BALDING Brits may be offered a cure for their thinning thatches – injections of Botox.

The toxic chemicals are generally used to smooth out wrinkles, but scientists have found they can cause hair to regrow.

The treatment was discovered by accident by a US plastic surgeon. Dr Simon Ourian was trying to cure headaches suffered by his cancer-victim mum after chemotherapy.

After injecting Botox into her scalp, he was stunned to see her hair regrow.

Baldness is caused by the hair follicles shrinking, so no new ones are produced. But Botox dilates the blood vessels, which allows nutrients to the hair shaft and stimulates new growth.

Dr Ourian has tested on volunteers for three years at his Beverly Hills practice. The treatment needs repeated injections, but he saw a “dramatic” difference after one session.

He said: “I was happily surprised. As hair loss is a significant source of insecurity, there was no shortage of volunteers.”

Botox is the medical name for botulinum toxin – a powerful natural poison. It was developed to stop eye muscle spasms but is commonly used as an anti-wrinkle treatment as it paralyses facial muscles.

Self-esteem faltering over hair loss struggle

Dear Robin: I’m 21 and will be graduating from university in June. I have always been ambitious, studying, working abroad and volunteering, trying to establish future career goals. This year, however, I have noticed that my hair is thinning quite drastically.

My hair is thin, but now it’s becoming more noticeable and my scalp often burns. I have done research and gone to a dermatologist, who ran some tests and said it was likely genetics. He became very cold when I mentioned hair loss, saying “this is not entirely common among girls your age.” Now whenever I think about my future, I hesitate for fear that too much stress is going to cause further hair loss. I try not to get too upset about it, because that will make things worse, but I find that I am anxious and even moody, starting to believe that the type of woman I aspired to become is no longer realistic.

[ All in my head ]

Dear All in my Head: I know firsthand how difficult it is to face losing your hair.

The dermatologist’s reason for brushing you off is disconcerting, so go get a second opinion and have your records sent over to avoid re-testing. There are many causes of hair loss in women, with genetically linked Alopecia areata topping the list. Some varieties of Alopecia are hormonal and can be treated; one variety is stress-related, and can be attributed to trauma, infection or malnutrition. Whatever the cause, get a concrete answer.

You will have many challenges in your life, but this can make you stronger if you empower yourself.

Meditate, do yoga, or whatever you do to keep yourself positive and centered. You will get through this, or at least learn to manage and get on with living your life as productively as you have all along.

What Is Natural Hair Loss? Am I Going Bald?

01.06.2009 in Uncategorized

We each have about 100,000 hairs on the scalp and it’s normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs from the head each day.

Hair is made in tiny pouches in the skin called hair follicles. Most scalp hairs last three years and grow 1cm a month.

After about three years, each hair on the scalp comes to the end of its life and falls out. The hair follicle rests for a short while and then makes a new hair.

Hair loss is thought to affect 10 million men and eight million women in the UK, but there are no definitive figures available.

How much do you spend on your hair?

14.05.2009 in Uncategorized

We reveal the true cost of how much British women spend on their hair.  British women spend more than £9,000 in a lifetime having their hair fixed, it was revealed today.

This works out at around £150 a year, with weddings being the main reason for a visit to the stylist, a survey by hotel chain Travelodge found.

An important date, a job interview, a girls’ night out and a vital business meeting were the next most popular reasons for having hair done.

BIG HAIR

Based on responses from 5,000 women, the poll showed that women’s favourite hairstyle was the “big hairdo” sported by Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole followed by the straight, sleek style of film star Jennifer Aniston.

The next most popular style was that of Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria, followed by Victoria Beckham and Kate Moss.

The survey also revealed that, on average, 68% of British women blow-dry their hair at home three times a week, each session taking 20 minutes.

This means that women spend an average of 17 weeks in a lifetime on this particular activity.
