Chris Rock Accused of Copying Documentary on Black Hair.

 LOS ANGELES (CN) – A documentary filmmaker has sued comedian Chris Rock for $5 million in Federal Court, claiming his upcoming movie about the politics of black hair is a copycat version of the documentary she made three years ago.
     Regina Kimball says she has shown her movie, “My Nappy Roots,” at various film festivals and universities, where she is respected as an “authority on the history and social dynamics of Black hair issues.” Kimball says she finished her movie in early 2006, but has never released it for commercial audiences.
     Rock’s movie, “Good Hair,” is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Friday.
     Kimball claims “Good Hair” producer Doug Miller asked for a private screening of “My Nappy Roots” in 2007, calling himself Rock’s “assistant” and hiding the fact that Rock was in the middle of working on his own movie on the same subject. Kimball says she agreed, on the condition that Miller sign a nondisclosure agreement.
     Kimball says she met Rock at Paramount Studios in Hollywood to show her movie. “Good Hair” writers Chuck Sklar and Lance Crouther attended the screening with Miller and Rock, but Kimball says she didn’t find out about the movie or its makers until later.
One scene in “My Nappy Roots” deals with the hair export business in India that supplies the majority of the hair used for weaves. During that scene, Kimball claims Rock pointed at the screen and yelled, “We have to go to India!”
     When the movie was over, Rock admitted that he was working on “a little film” for HBO about black hair and “didn’t know what to do,” the lawsuit says.
     Kimball says she was “stunned” and “felt violated” to find out about the alleged pretext for the screening.
     After the screening, Kimball claims Miller and Rock refused to sign the nondisclosure agreement.
“Good Hair” copies coverage from “My Nappy Roots” about the “story of the weave,” Kimball says, using similar footage from India, the leading exporter of human hair, to depict the Tonsure ceremony at India’s Temple Tirumala Tirupati. Both movies also include coverage of the controversy over who invented Jheri Curl, the toxicity of the chemicals used in hair relaxing treatments, and celebrity interviews, the lawsuit states.
     Kimball and Rock both claim they were inspired to make their movies by their daughters’ questions about their own hair.
     Reginald Brown is representing Regina Kimball and her company, Virgin Moon Entertainment, in her lawsuit against Rock, Chris Rock Enterprises, HBO Films, Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment in Los Angeles Federal Court.

Technical Research: Androgen Alopecia (Common Baldness) Mechanism

The miniaturisation and eventual loss of the hair and hair follicle in pre-determined scalp areas, for both men and women, characterises Androgenic Alopecia or Common Baldness. First classified by Hamilton in the 1940s on work with Eunuchs, it is known that Androgens (hormones that promote male characteristics) are an essential factor in the atrophication process.

Normal levels of testosterone (the male sex hormone) in men are sufficient to produce growth of terminal hair in the beard area, atrophy of the hair in certain pre-determined scalp areas, and no effect on hair on the eyebrows and eyelashes. The individual hair follicles are site-specific. In women there is evidence of higher than normal levels of circulating androgens in cases of Androgenic Alopecia.

The genetic influence on these site-specific hair follicles is pronounced, and genetically, Androgenic Alopecia is considered to be an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetration.

To date no specific set of “balding” genes have been identified and no genetic solution has so far been found, although this may eventually represent the most elegant solution to the problem of Androgenic Alopecia.

The individual hair follicles have an intrinsic response to the androgens which promote and amplify the individual follicle’s genetic programming. This site-specific property gives the basis for hair transplant surgery as the genetic code of the individual hair follicle is maintained when the follicle is transplanted to a different part of the scalp.

It is also known that Androgenic Alopecia and beard growth do not reverse and revert back to the pre-pubertal levels if men are castrated after puberty. The gene expression is maintained without the androgen present, once the triggering has occurred.

The specific hair follicle response to androgens requires the presence of intracellular androgen receptors. Androgenic Alopecia is absent in patients with Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome. Patients with 5-alpha-reductase deficiency are also generally thought not to go bald, but the familial influence is not clear and the role of 5-alpha-reductase less certain.

The metabolism of androgens in Androgenic Alopecia is not fully understood. Hair follicles from all body sites are known to metabolise testosterone to the less active androstenedione but higher 5-alpha-reductase activity has been shown in balding hair follicles, compared to non-balding follicles. There are known to be two types of 5-alpha-reductase (Type I and Type II) of which Type I is associated with sebaceous gland and scalp skin activity and Type II with androgen action in Androgenic Alopecia. Conversion of the less active testosterone to the more potent metabolite di-hydroxy testosterone (D.H.T.) triggers the gradual atrophy and eventual loss of the hair follicle.

Androgenic Alopecia Treatment

Anti-Androgens
The blocking of androgen receptors is effective but blocks all androgen activity leading to quite serious side effects on male masculinity and feminisation of the male foetus in pregnant women. However, ‘Cyproterone Acetate’ and ‘Spirolactone’, both anti-androgens, have a stabilising effect on Androgenic Alopecia but do not cause regrowth.

5-alpha-reductase Inhibitors
‘Finnasteride’ (Merck) has been used as a 5-alpha-reductase Type 2 inhibitor, blocking the conversion of testosterone to di-hydroxy testosterone and is administered both orally (the ‘baldness pill’) and as a topical lotion. The progression of hair loss was slowed and some hair growth achieved in men under 40, but cessation of treatment led to progression of balding. Side effects have been reported including reduced libido, and reduced ejaculate volume. Finnasteride must not be used by women of child bearing age since it may cause Hypospadias (developmental anomalies) in a male foetus.

Non-hormonal Therapy
A topically applied non-hormonal therapy, offers the least risk of side effects and the most realistic method to date to slow or reverse the course of Androgenic Alopecia. Treatment systems can be designed for delivery into cells of the hair bulb and considerable research is being undertaken into this type of product. Non-hormonal products have been shown to stimulate the growth of isolated hair follicles in culture in the absence of a blood supply. The mechanism for this type of product is not fully understood and the products are usually derived empirically. A number of these clinically active products are known.

HAIR LOSS

Men often assume there’s nothing that can be done about hair loss, but that’s not true, says Dr Sunil Chopra, clinical director of The Dermatology Centre in London. ‘There are over-the-counter products which work really well in preventing further loss,’ he says.
‘Men tend to think that because you can buy it from a chemist and don’t need a prescription, it won’t work – but it does.’
He says the drug minoxidil – available under the brand name Regaine in shampoo or lotion form – works well by improving blood flow to the hair follicles.
‘The earlier you use it, the better,’ he says. ‘It works in about 70 per cent of men who can see up to a 40 per cent improvement in growth. But most men use it for a couple of months then give up – you have to use it for about 18 months to really see results. And once you stop using it, you’ll start losing your hair again.’

Hair straightener bid to boost PE

Hair straighteners have been introduced to three schools in West Dunbartonshire in a bid to encourage more girls to take part in physical education.

The local council bought them after teenage girls said they worried about “bad hair” after sports classes.

Nine sets of straighteners have been installed in the female changing areas of three new “flagship” schools in the area at a cost of about £800.

The council said the move was part of wider efforts to improve PE facilities.

Hair straighteners are now in place for female pupils at St Peter the Apostle, Clydebank High and Vale of Leven Academy.

‘Falling participation’

A council spokeswoman said: “West Dunbartonshire Council has installed nine sets of hair straighteners within the changing facilities at each of the council’s three new flagship schools.

“The council considers the views of pupils to be critical in ensuring that the school environment is as positive and inclusive as possible and pupils were widely consulted during the design phase.

“The falling rate of female participation in sport was a key issue discussed by pupils and improvements to changing and showering facilities, including the installation of hair straighteners, was considered important in reversing this trend.

“The installation amounts to a total expenditure of less than £1,000 to encourage more girls to participate in PE and support positive self-image.”
