Hair Loss And Stress

07.05.2009 in Uncategorized

MORE understanding is needed of the psychological problems of people affected by hair loss, experts said.

Almost a third of people in the UK suffered from hair loss or had experienced it.

While the majority were affected by male pattern baldness or hair thinning, around 2% suffered from alopecia.

A “significant minority” were found to be at risk of serious psychosocial consequences, including depression, anxiety, lower self-esteem and identity change, according to the report’s author, health psychologist Dr Nigel Hunt.

He said: “While hair loss affects a quarter of the population, the psychosocial consequences are relatively unknown.

“This report demonstrates that hair loss cannot be dismissed as a one-dimensional problem but is a serious issue that requires emotional support.”

Sufferers reported a lack of understanding from doctors, who told patients that hair-thinning was a normal part of ageing and that asit was not life-threatening there was little to worry about.

Understanding How Your Hair Is Structured Helps The Fight Against Hair Loss

16.04.2009 in Uncategorized

Who’d have thought something as fine as a strand of hair could be so complex?

Here’s a little insight into the composition of your hair:

Papilla  at the base of each hair follicle is a structure called the papilla, made mainly of connective tissue and a capillary loop. Cell division in the papilla is rare or non-existent.

papilla1

Matrix  around the papilla, the hair matrix is a collection of closely packed cells often interspersed with pigment-producing cells, known as melanocytes. Cell division in the hair matrix forms the major structures of the hair fibre and the inner root sheath. Of all cell populations in the human body, the hair matrix epithelium is one of the fastest growing.

Root Sheath  this structure comprises an external root sheath, a middle layer, and an internal section of dead skin – or ‘cuticle’ – which is continuous with the hair fibre’s outermost layer.

Hair Fibre  this is composed of a section of dead skin that is continuous with the root sheath, an intermediate layer, and an inner core.

Other Structures connected to each hair follicle is a sebaceous gland, which generates the oily substance or ‘sebum’ that protects the hair and skin. Arrector pili muscles cause the follicle lissis to become more perpendicular to the surface of the skin. Apocrine glands secrete sweat. Hair follicle receptors sense the position of the hairs.

Bigger Problem or Just A Bad hair day?

24.03.2009 in Uncategorized

According to the American Academy of Dermatology hair will regrow spontaneously in some forms of hair loss. See a trichologist if, over time, you have documented your hair loss (where on your head? Approximately how many hairs per day?) and any medical, drug or lifestyle changes you’ve experienced (become a vegetarian, say or started a new contraceptive pill.)

In the meantime, check out the following facts on normal hair growth:

About 90% of the hair is growing at any one time, and the growth phase lasts between 2 and 6 years.

10% of the hair is in a resting phase that lasts 2 to 3 months, and at the end of its resting state the hair is shed.

When a hair is shed, a new hair from the same follicle replaces it and the growing cycle starts once more.

Scalp hair grows about one-half inch per month. But as you age, that rate of hair growth slows.

Most hair shedding is due to the normal hair cycle; losing up to 100 hairs a day is normal.
