What Is Acne Vulgaris? Do I Have It?

02.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Acne vulgaris is distinguished by red, elevated areas on the skin that can grow into pustules, which may be slightly painful and are often pruritic or itchy. Without treatment these pustules may develop further into cysts that can cause scarring and destroy the hair follicle. Although commonest in adolescents, acne may appear for the first time in the mid-twenties or even later and persists in a significant number of people into their 40s or even 50s.  It is caused by an abnormal response in the skin to normal levels of the male hormone, testosterone, in the blood.

What Is Trichotillomania? Do I Have It?

02.10.2007 in Uncategorized

Answer: Trichotillomania is a compulsive urge to pull and/or twist of the hair until it breaks off, resulting in noticeable hair loss. The hair may be lost in round patches or diffusely across the scalp. It is a type of compulsive behaviour and its causes are not clearly understood, although symptoms usually begin before the age of 17, with women almost four times likely to be affected than men. It may affect as much as 4% of the population. The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer and permanently damaged if not treated.
