TRACTION and TRAUMATIC ALOPECIA

16 Jul 2008, by haircentre in ALOPECIA AREATA, Uncategorized

This condition is caused by repeated MANUAL traction, e.g. Trichotillamania,( a psychosomatic condition where the patient pulls ones hair out ), Braiding , Pony tails. Curlers  worn at night. Hot combing to straighten the hair. Constant pulling over long periods of time will eventually cause weakness in the Henley and Huxley layers of the hair, and Atrophy of the follicle (gradual shrinking )

Lack of visibility of the follicle opening and scaring indicates final destruction of the hair follicle.

TRAUMATIC

Chemical:  Bleach, Permanent Dye ( Para ) Relaxer (Thio-glycollic) Perm, Radiotherapy, Freezing, Friction, excessive massage, scratching.

TREATMENT

Take away cause. Recommended trichological treatments – contact the Hair Centre and speak to one of our trichologist for advice on black hair.

CLINICAL FEATURES

Manual: Type of hair style worn gives evidence of marginal loss, temporal / corona e.g. ponytail
Linear loss: Cane row braiding.
Sausage shape: Tight rollers worn at night
Scalp:  Can become erythemas, with swelling around follicles. Can precede Folliculitis.

My hair loss looks just like the one on the website. The only way I can disguise this is to gel the front of my hair down using a non alcohol gel. My hair is long on all the other parts of my head so I have to take some from the back and bring it to the front for coverage.
