Hair loss conditions

Follicultis Declavans

Folliculitis decalvans is a slowly spreading inflammation of the hair follicle, which leads to progressive scarring. It is distinguished by follicular plugging and multiple rounded or oval patches can be found on the scalp, each surrounded by crops of follicular pustules. There may be no other changes, but successive crops of pustules, each followed by the destruction of the affected follicles, produce the slow extension of the alopecia. The exact cause of this condition is still uncertain, but is most likely an abnormal ‘host response’ to various common bacteria.

Follicultis Declavans before/after treatment images

Folliculitis decalvans (FD) is a rare, chronic cicatricial (scarring) alopecia that occurs in adults and classically presents as an expanding patch of alopecia with peripheral pustules on the scalp (picture 1A-B). Patients may experience associated pruritus or pain.

Can Follicultis Declavans be cured?

There are many different treatments available to control the inflammation of folliculitis decalvans, but unfortunately no cure has been found. Scarring, if it develops, is permanent. Treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation and preventing further scarring.
