You were diagnosed as suffering from androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness: What can you do?

06.02.2008 in MALE HAIR LOSS

Androgenetic alopecia (Male Pattern Baldness) has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head.  This hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone.  The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

To treat this condition, we would generally recommend an intensive 12-month treatment course of:

Minoxidil 5%+ Medroxy Progesterone Hair Growth Stimulant

Minoxidil is a vasodilator and dilates the blood capillaries responsible for blood supply to the hair follicles, thus allowing more blood to reach the hair follicles and encourage hair growth.  Medroxy Progesterone is a synthetic hormone designed to block the conversion of testosterone to DHT or Dihydro-Testosterone.

Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.

Please note: As vasodilators are designed to dilate the capillary blood vessels the scalp may redden on the area where the stimulant is applied and may also tingle slightly for a while.

In conjunction with:

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser

biostim1.gif
This stimulant contains a very effective, natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.  It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.

We would also recommend that you visit the Hair Centre regularly for check-ups so that your progress may be monitored effectively.

Baldness – One of men's greatest fears?

29.01.2008 in MALE HAIR LOSS

One in five men in the UK are more frightened of going bald than losing their health, turning senile, losing their sexual virility, or gaining wrinkles, a new survey has revealed.

The survey, conducted on behalf of The Alopecia Clinic, asked men aged between 20 and 35 about their fears as they grew older, and found that more than 80 per cent said losing their hair was a major concern. One in five said that it was their greatest fear about the ageing process.

The research is supported by a recent medical study into the negative psychological effects of hair loss which found that it can cause low self-esteem and depression.

The common misconception that hair loss is an incurable and hereditary condition was cited among many of those surveyed as a key factor in their concerns.

The most common type of hair loss, alopecia androgenetica or ‘male pattern baldness’, is a genetic condition which develops gradually and increases with age and affects approximately two-thirds of all men.

Despite the number of men affected by the condition, fewer than one per cent of sufferers actually seek help, as most are unaware of the treatments available or are concerned about the stigma attached to having treatment.

Andy McCarthy of The Alopecia Clinic, commented: “Baldness is traditionally been something that hasn’t been taken seriously, even by doctors, however it can have a real impact on self esteem.

“Hair loss, or alopecia, is very unpredictable which means that it can be an extremely distressing condition that leaves people feeling completely helpless.”

A recent study by the University of Nottingham acknowledged that alopecia can cause anxiety and depression, low self esteem, poor quality of life, and poor body image. Another study found that some alopecia sufferers experienced such an ongoing feeling of loss that, for some individuals, coping with the condition could be equated with grieving after bereavement.

Andy added: “Because hair loss is so common amongst men, most people think it is something they just have to accept, but there have been a number of recent technological advancements in ways of treating it.”

Some of the new methods of treating the condition include hair replacement systems, laser regrowth and hair volumiser which are undetectable, permanent and non surgical.

Hair loss can also be the result of other health issues, such as stress or hormonal problems, or nutritional, medical, mineral and vitamin imbalances, which if correctly diagnosed can often be treated.

Andy continued: “We hope that the results of the study highlight that it is a very real issue for most men. However technological advancements mean that baldness no longer needs to be something that men have to accept as part of the ageing process.”

Rogaine Seeks Place in the Morning Routine

24.01.2008 in MALE HAIR LOSS

nytlogo153x23.gif

SINCE its introduction in 1988, Rogaine has always been a bit of a punch line, not only for what it does (help grow hair) but also for its sales results, which never quite (insert bad hair-growth pun here).
rogaine-hair-loss.jpg An image from a television commercial for Rogaine.

But 2007 was a breakout year for Rogaine. A mousse-like version was introduced in 2006 and proved far more popular than the traditional liquid formulation, which comes in a bottle with an eyedropper. The foam version is dispensed by pressing a nozzle, a convenient feature for a product meant to be used twice a day.

Now comes a new marketing campaign for Rogaine that tries to reposition it as an everyday bathroom essential — like deodorant or toothpaste — rather than a medication. “Your daily grooming routine probably already includes brushing, shaving, maybe more,” reads a promotion on the Rogaine Web site. “Take a look at what adding just a few minutes more with Men’s Rogaine Foam can do.”

The campaign tries to encourage younger men to start using Rogaine before hair loss is evident, since the product is most effective when used on thinning patches rather than outright bald ones. And for the first time Rogaine is directly catering to gay men by purchasing spots on Logo, the gay-themed channel owned by Viacom.

Unlike many ads for hair growth or replacement products, the Rogaine spots do not show “before” and “after” images. Rather, the themes are convenience and efficacy: with assiduous use, the message goes, Rogaine can not only regrow hair but keep remaining hair out of the shower drain. (The slogan: “Use it or lose it.”)

“In the morning it’s all about get in, get out,” begins a commercial by BBDO in New York that began appearing recently. It shows a young man getting ready for work by shaving, showering, brushing his teeth and, yes, rubbing a dollop of foam into the crown of his head.

First Commercial Genetic Test For Male Baldness Being Launched.

15.01.2008 in MALE HAIR LOSS

Affordable, Accurate, Understandable Analysis Offered By Biotech Start-up “HairDX”

HairDX, LLC, a biotech start-up, today announced the commercial release of HairDX.com, a simple consumer-friendly test that provides an accurate and understandable genetic analysis of a man’s likelihood of developing male pattern baldness (Androgenetic Alopecia).

This simple and highly accurate test costs $149. The customer orders the test kit on the Internet, and it is shipped to his home. He swabs his mouth (inside cheek) for several seconds and returns the swab to the HairDX lab. HairDX performs a confidential and anonymous genetic analysis of his genetic variations related to pattern baldness.

Using results supported by several peer-reviewed scientific studies associating variations in the X -chromosome to pattern baldness, the test enables users to learn about their genetic predisposition to balding before the age of 40. People who have certain variations in their X-chromosome are likely (95.1% to 98.1%) to develop pattern baldness before age 40.

“Each year, men in their twenties and thirties spend millions of dollars on pharmaceuticals, topical products, and other costly treatments trying to prevent baldness. Some of this is done by males who may not go bald in the first place,” says HairDX CEO Andy Goren.

The information provided by HairDX enables the consumer to make informed decisions about what approach, if any, he should take, including discussing hair loss with a qualified physician. HairDX.com also provides a support center with access to a registered nurse.

“The most common form of hair loss, Androgenetic Alopecia, is hereditary. Looking at your father’s or grandfather’s head has been an inaccurate, nonscientific barometer. The genetic revolution will enable patients and physicians to gain deeper understanding of hair loss,” says Peter Novak, MD, PhD, a leading researcher at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA and an innovator in the field of stem cell therapies for treatment of hair loss.

HairDX’s scientific board includes Novak and notable genetics Professor Doron Lancet PhD – Head of the Crown Human Genome Center at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

HairDX is committed to confidential and private testing, with genetic analysis performed by BioServe, a leader in the processing, development, and validation of diagnostic tests for the practice of personalized, predictive and preventive medicine. Based in Beltsville, MD, BioServe is a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) certified laboratory (the highest quality of laboratory certification).
