The bald and the beautiful

19.12.2012 in MALE HAIR LOSS

YUL BRYNNER, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Jason Statham, David Beckham, Rovilson Fernandez, Mark Salling (of Glee fame) and yes, even the fictional Les Grossman (a.k.a. the knuckle-ringed alter ego of Tom Cruise) have proven Delilah wrong; a buzz cut — heck, an all-the-way bald do — won’t unman a dude with attitude.

In case you missed the headline — bald is bad, bald is sexy, bald is rugged hot — losing all that hair actually means you’ve got a high MQ (manliness quotient).

“Most male pattern baldness is caused by DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which is a bypro-duct of an overabundance of testosterone. So if they want to look on the bright side, it is a sign that they are truly real men. This chemical actually chokes off the blood supply to the hair follicle, which is the main nourishment for hair growth, and in turn eventually kills the hair follicle,” Sujiivana Salon Creative Director Kne Palmer wrote BusinessWorld.

Let’s rephrase that: if you’re prematurely balding, your guy hormones have killed off all your hair.

Or, allowed Mr. Palmer, it could also be because you’ve somehow damaged the hair follicle by some mechanical means (wore that baseball cap too often, took to cornrows because maybe you grew up watching Wesley Snipes or Dennis Rodman, or back in the days of grunge, you grew your hair long and wore it in a tight ponytail; in which case, this could be remedied by getting rid of all those bad habits). Women, in this instance, can also suffer hair loss. “The constant tension put stress on the follicle and damages the follicle,” cautioned Mr. Palmer.

The last type of hair loss is alopecia, which can have many different causes (one of which is an abnormality in the immune system), and is very hard to remedy. This type starts to show up with patches of bald areas around the head, and while stress and diet can affect this type of hair loss, a doctor is better equipped to handle the case.

Male Hair Loss Treated Success Story

30.11.2012 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

For many men, losing hair is something will have to be faced as part of the aging process. Common hair loss can be treated with preventative hair loss treatments and products. If this is happening to you, you are not alone, as a simple walk down the street will show you. About 25 per cent of men begin losing hair before they reach 30 and two thirds before the age of 60. Sometimes men can begin losing hair in their teens and can reach their early twenties with very little, if any, hair left on the crown of their head. Usually, however, the hair loss is gradual, developing over a period of twenty to thirty years.

The most common cause of hair loss in men is genetic:

Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head. The hair above the ears and at the nape of the neck is unaffected. This hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be oversensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

” I have used Vitastim and Biostim treatments for the past 12 months. I am very happy with how my hair now looks. As you can see it was really thin and dry at the start of treatment at The Hair Centre. I was quickly going bald. I am 25, and far to young to go bald. I saw The Hair Centre Before and After Photos and thought, why not, I’ll have another go. I took The Hair Centre advice. I must admit that I have used different treatments in the past such as minoxidil: unsuccessfully with another London Hair Centre. But as you can see my hair now looks perfectly fine and there is no trace of baldness or thinning. I am delighted with my results and send all my friends to The Hair Centre.”

Causes of Hair Loss: Male pattern baldness

06.07.2011 in MALE HAIR LOSS

Male pattern baldness

Despite all the different causes of hair loss, the leading cause is one that we can’t do much about. Male pattern baldness, medically known as androgenetic alopecia, refers to hair thinning in an “M-shaped” pattern that is typically mentioned when men talk about balding.

Over time, the hair follicles will change and shrink leading to thinning hair. While many treatments are available, they aren’t guaranteed to work and most only slow progression (although some can lead to hair regrowth) and are not permanent solutions for hair loss. In the end, we’re all victims of our genes — and that’s something that will never change, along with the last resort of embracing your baldness.

Early hair loss doubles prostate cancer risk

21.02.2011 in MALE HAIR LOSS

Men who begin going bald at 20 have twice the risk of prostate cancer in later life, according to research.

The link could help identify those most in danger of developing the disease the most common cancer among men in the UK and enable them to be targeted for screening.

A study of 388 prostate cancer patients and 281 healthy volunteers found those with the disease were twice as likely to have started going bald when they were 20. But for those who lost their hair later, when they were 30 or 40, there was no difference in their risk compared to the control group.

Until now there has been conflicting evidence about the relationship between hair loss and cancer.

Baldness is caused by DHT, a chemical produced by the male hormone testosterone. Studies have also linked testosterone to cancer tumour growth.

But the French research, published in the journal Annals of Oncology, is the first to suggest going bald early is a bad sign.

Professor Philippe Giraud, of Paris Descartes University, said: “Balding at 20 may be one of these easily identifiable risk factors and more work needs to be done now to confirm this.”

Dr Kate Holmes, of the Prostate Cancer Charity, said many other factors, such as diet and lifestyle, also affected the risk of prostate cancer. – Daily Mail
