Stem Cell Treatment Helps Children With Hair Loss

17.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Experiments done with children suffering from the hair loss condition alopecia areata have produced promising results which could lead to further research and treatments. The study which was done by Professor Marwa Fawzi at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cairo involved the use of stem cells being extracted from their own scalps and then reinjected in areas on their head where the hair loss was evident.

The study which was done on a small group of eight children all of whom had significant alopecia resulted in them growing back around half of the hair that they had lost. By using small amounts of the skin from the children’s scalps and then isolating the hair follicle stem cells which are responsible for hair production, Professor Fawzi was able to grow more of them in her laboratory and therefore increase the number of these all important stem cells.

The scalp injections which took place 4 weeks after the original skin removal focused on the balding areas and showed statistically significant results. Professor Fawzi explained her research at the annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research taking place in Barcelona. She explained that the condition is extremely distressing for young children who become ostracised by their peers and who suffer from a lot of stress which further aggravates their hair loss.

Professor Fawzi explained that this research had not been tested on men suffering from male pattern baldness which is caused by genetic factors however it is known that numerous research projects around the world are being done in this area.

Professor Fawzi is now planning to continue her studies using a larger group of children suffering from alopecia areata and will be using a placebo controlled format to add clinical integrity to her study.

We believe that the most likely next discovery to treat male pattern baldness and all other types of baldness will come from stem cell research.

Trichotillomania: Pulling your hair out

15.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Two to four percent of the population has trichotillomania, which is the urge to pull hair from your own body. It can be a small thing, like plucking at your beard while thinking. Or a huge thing, like pulling out all of the hair on your head.

trichotillomania-1

Why do people do this?

For some it causes pleasure, for others guilt. For many, it’s similar to the sensation of cutting, with pain and pleasure mixed.

trichotillomania-2

Recurrent pulling out of one’s hair resulting in noticeable hair loss.  An increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair or when attempting to resist the behavior. Pleasure, gratification, or relief when pulling out the hair. The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupation, or other important areas of functioning.

trichotillomania

It’s an impulse-control disorder, similar to other obsessions or compulsions.

The term trichotillomania comes from the Greek, meaning “hair pull frenzy.”

Some medication may be helpful, but the most effective treatment is behavior therapy.

Do you know of anyone struggling with this disorder?

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Gray hair hasn't been linked to nutritional deficiency

09.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

What causes gray hair?

h-mirrenr-gere

Is there some vitamin or mineral missing in the diet?

Not too long ago, calcium deficiency was strongly suspected as a cause of gray hair. In fact, researchers thought gray hair might even be a marker for osteoporosis. But the theory didn’t hold up; a good study of women with prematurely gray hair found no signs of bone loss. So far, nobody’s been able to find other nutritional links for silvery locks.

So why does it happen?

European scientists recently found that the hydrogen peroxide naturally found in your body (the same stuff that turns brunettes into bleach-bottle blondes) may eventually build up in your hair follicles and block pigment production in your hair, so it literally bleaches itself. It’s possible that faulty stem cells are to blame for this, and no doubt genetic programming plays a role, too. But nobody has truly cracked the gray code. Some of our Chinese friends swear by black sesame seeds (with seasonings in the grocery store) to keep black hairs from graying. Anecdotal reports are strong, but controlled trials are lacking. We bought some, though, and eat them because, no matter what, they taste good.

Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Steroid Abuse Leads To Alarming Rise In Hair Loss Victims

09.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE, MALE HAIR LOSS

Men are being warned that steroids can lead to premature baldness after a leading hair clinic reported an alarming rise in the number of patients affected by the designer drugs.

steroids

Optima Hair Specialists which supplies advanced hair replacement systems has seen a 60 per cent increase in enquiries from men who have taken anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and suffered early hair loss as a result.

AAS are believed to stimulate Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) a powerful sex hormone that triggers baldness in men.

Peter Murtha, founder of Optima Hair Specialists, said: “It is widely accepted that DHT has an adverse affect on hair follicles and is the main culprit behind male pattern baldness. Recent studies have found that steroid drugs can increase the levels of DHT within the body and therefore accelerate hair loss.

“Alarmingly, we’ve seen a significant rise in enquiries from men who have taken steroids and subsequently suffered from premature baldness. I feel it’s crucial to warn others of the potential dangers, so they can avoid the side effects of AAS.”

Peter added: “If you have taken steroids and suffered premature baldness, all is not lost. There are treatments and solutions available to help you regain your head of hair and your confidence. At Optima, we provide a range of advanced hair replacement systems that tackle your hair loss, improve your appearance and boost your self-esteem.”

If you are thinking of using anabolic steroids to boost your muscles growth you should be aware of the consequences of your actions. The side effects of steroids are numerous and can be severe and you should not use anything unless your doctor has given to you. Be warned also that there are many fake and dangerously manufactured steroids sold on the black market which find their way into gyms and health shops.

Botox potentially halts hair loss

06.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Beverly Hills, Calif.  Injecting the scalp with Botox is an effective way to encourage new hair growth, according to an aesthetic surgeon who injected his mother’s scalp with Botox to treat severe headaches caused by chemotherapy. Her hair started to grow back after the Botox was administered, Cosmeticsdesign.com reports.

Simon Ourian, M.D., says he has been carrying out comprehensive tests on volunteers at his clinic, which has allowed him to fine tune and develop the hair loss treatment in the last three years. In addition, he combines the Botox formulation with a cocktail of vitamins aimed at improving blood circulation and cell growth in the scalp area, which could be particularly helpful for treating alopecia areata, according to Cosmeticsdesign.com.

The course of injections would be taken two to three times a year to reduce scalp tension and improve the level of nutrients in the tissue surrounding hair follicles to reactivate hair growth. Other hair loss medications, such as Rogaine and Propecia, claim to either stop hair loss only or slow hair loss with modest hair regrowth. Experts say further testing is needed to determine Dr. Ourian’s results.
