I can vouch for the effectiveness of the frozen cap in connection with chemotherapy treatment for cancer and resulting hair-loss (Write Back, April 1).

Almost 19 years ago I had to have some urgent and drastic surgery — no time for preliminary chemo treatment.

To gather the latest knowledge and expert opinions on the topic of dandruff and hair quality, a scientific colloquium was held in Genoa on 3rd July 2008.

Various sets of data and academic hypotheses now exist on how the presence of micro-organisms and dandruff on the scalp may be linked to hair quality.

Therefore, the aim of the colloquium was to discuss the existing knowledge and most likely hypotheses with the global leading hair experts to develop a model for a possible connection of the phenomena observed on the scalp, in the follicle, and in the hair fibre.

Colloquium Discussion

The colloquium was kicked off with a general introduction followed by a short overview of the existing data and hypotheses concerning the overall topic. The following discussion of the expert members centred around the key areas: the role of micro-organisms in the quality of hair, irritation of the scalp skin and its link to dandruff, irritation as a factor determining hair quality, impact of irritation on hair integrity, and possible treatment options that enhance the scalp health and the quality of hair.

Make My Hair Grow (What's Normal Hair Loss And What's Not): The Hair Growth Cycle

Normal hair cycle is associated with the temporary loss of hair and the growth of new hair from the same follicles. The hair growth cycle in humans occurs in three phases:

Anagen-growth phase
Catagen-degradation phase
Telogen-resting phase

There is no break or discontinuity between phases; the hair cycle is a continuous process that occurs for the life of the hair follicle. A complete scalp hair cycle stretches over 2 to 8 years:

Anagen (growth)-2 to 8 years
Catagen (degradation)-2 to 4 weeks
Telogen (rest)-2 to 4 months

The “dead” hair that was degraded during the catagen (degradation) phase is pushed out of the follicle when a new hair emerges in anagen (growth) phase. A healthy person with a full head of hair will shed on average 50 to 100 “dead” hairs per day. Shedding can be influenced by internal factors such as age, change in hormonal or nutritional status, skin disease and stress, and by external factors such as cancer chemotherapy, ionizing radiation, and exposure to some types of industrial chemicals.

All follicles, everywhere on the body, undergo hair cycle. The duration of each cycle may vary by body site; on the same person, scalp hair cycle may be slightly different in duration from body hair cycle.

ISHRS Releases Study Showing More Hair Is Still a Hot Commodity During Recession

While lately most people are skeptical about their return on investment from stocks, some seem more inclined to invest in their locks.

According to a new online survey conducted by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), 59.8 percent of people who were asked whether they would rather have more hair, more money or more friends chose more hair. By comparison, only 26.2 percent of respondents chose more money and 13.9 percent said they would rather have more friends. Of the 1,407 people polled, slightly more women (64.2 percent) than men (59.1 percent) indicated they wanted more hair than more money or more friends.

“This survey confirms that even during tough economic times, the desire for more hair is undeniably strong and seen by many as an investment with real dividends — both personally and professionally,” said William M. Parsley, M.D., president of the ISHRS. “These days, men and women are looking for any edge in this tight job market. Getting their hair restored can help make people more marketable to employers in looking more youthful, not to mention more confident in their overall appearance.”
