Beware of Hair Loss Wonder Cures

Hair loss can leave people feeling vulnerable. This can make them easy targets for salesmen who make false claims about expensive treatments.

It’s important to be wary of the many private clinics that advertise their celebrity-endorsed wonder cures on the back pages of newspapers.

“With hair loss, your Westminster Trichologist should be your first stop,” says Gary Heron, a consultant trichologist at the Westmisnter Practice of Trichology, at The Hair Centre in London, who also runs a private practice.

“Some private commercial clinics have very assertive salesmen who make prospective clients feel completely inadequate,” he says.

“You don’t need to go to a private commercial clinic. Don’t be put off from going to see a Trichologist just because you think your hair loss may be only cosmetic.”

The hair on our head is a defining characteristic of our identity, according to psychologists. It reflects the image we have of ourselves and how we want others to see us.

In today’s society, a full head of hair is a sign of good health and youthfulness. We often use it to attract the opposite sex.

So when we start to lose our hair, we lose a part of our identity. This can knock our self-confidence and sometimes lead to depression.

How badly the loss is felt depends on the individual. “The psychological impact of hair can be huge,” says Trichologist Gary Heron, at the Westmisnter Practice of Trichology.

“Hair is so significant because of what it is and where it is. Hair is part of us, much more intimate than things like clothes. When it goes, you lose a part of yourself.”

Depending on the type of hair loss (medically known as alopecia), your GP can refer you to a specialist, generally a trichologist, who will provide you with an accurate diagnosis.

Gary Heron says: “You’ll have access to the most effective treatments available through The Hair Centre and at a fraction of the cost of going to other Private Commercial Clinics and Centres.”

Hair Loss: Low thyroid levels

Over exercise and frequent dieting may have an effect on your thyroid function and thyroid problems can have an impact on your hair, usually causing quite dramatic hair fall rather than just slow thinning.

Again, blood tests will reveal your thyroid status and thyroid hormones can be prescribed if necessary. Trichologists are currently working with endocrinologists at University College London Hospital to investigate whether the topical application of triiodothyronine (T3), the thyroid hormone most likely to affect the hair follicles, can reduce hair loss.

Hair Loss: Low iron levels

Anaemia is an often overlooked cause of hair loss, according to trichologist Gary Heron.

Have a blood test to check your iron (haemoglobin) levels and get your ferritin levels analysed too. Ferritin is an iron storage protein that plays a part in the production of hair cells. If it is low, or even at the lower end of average, it could be worthwhile taking iron supplements – and the results could become apparent within months. But be aware that iron sulphate supplements can cause constipation and iron-related hair loss tends to be more common in vegetarians.

How To Deal With Thinning Hair

22.05.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Many women will experience hair loss as they get older. SHE’s Beauty Director Eve Cameron explains what causes it and how you can help prevent it.

Our hair is inextricably bound up with our femininity, sexuality and self-image and it’s something we often take for granted. Until, that is, we start to notice our crowning glory is looking thinner than it used to be, or that, alarmingly, large amounts of hair are falling out during shampooing or styling.

A certain amount of hair loss is normal, of course, as each hair follicle produces around 20 new hairs during its lifespan. When a hair reaches its optimum growth, it sheds and a new one grows in its place. And, as we get older, our hair can also lose its volume, which can be mistaken for thinning hair. In fact, it’s just that the diameter of the hairs gets smaller, so the bottom line is that at 40 you simply don’t have the fullness you had at 20. And these thinner, weaker strands won’t grow to the same length as the younger, ‘wider’ strands.

According to some studies and reports, female hair loss seems to be on the increase, yet many women find their GPs are unsympathetic, putting it down to that catch-all ‘stress’. It’s true that stress could be a factor, partly because it can increase your levels of male hormones called androgens which, if you have hair follicles that are susceptible to them, could cause hair loss.

But don’t be too alarmed. Thinning hair doesn’t mean that baldness is imminent. There are myriad reasons why your hair may fall out and getting the right diagnosis sooner, rather than later, is vital for improving (if not completely resolving) the problem. But if you’re really concerned, get a referral from your GP to a dermatologist specialising in hair loss, or see a Westminster Trichologist.

What you eat is important in preventing hair loss.

20.05.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

HEALTHY HAIR Going on a low-calorie fad diet may be the worst thing you can do to your hair. Diets are often low in important nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamin A, which can stunt hair growth and lead to dullness or even hair loss.

Your hair grows up to a half-inch every month and the foundation for all that new hair, skin and nail growth is the nutrients we eat.

If you were born with fine, thin hair, no food will give you thick locks. But a well-balanced diet can make a difference, nutrition experts say.

Spinach, broccoli and Swiss chard are good sources of vitamins A and C, which your body needs to produce sebum. The oily substance, secreted by your hair follicles, is the body’s natural hair conditioner. Legumes like kidney beans and lentils provide plentiful protein to promote hair growth, as well as ample iron, zinc and biotin.
