Brushing your hair too much can cause hair loss

A new study conducted by an Israel dermatologist suggests that combing your hair too much can cause you to lose your hair.
According to a new report released by an Israeli dermatologist, Alexander Kirdman says combing your hair too much can make you lose your hair.

The test was done with 14 women who kept a diary of their hair loss and combing habits. The conclusion was showing that the more the women combed their hair, the more hair was lost.

Kirdman, head of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, told Haaretz, “The women who combed twice a day lost three times more hair than those who combed once a day. I was surprised by the results, as in medical circles the comb is believed to improve blood circulation and reduce hair loss.”

The study was published in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. 12.08.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, TRICHOLOGIST

westminster-trichologist

The results of a customer satisfaction report carried out support the fact that our Hair Centre provides a very professional service.

The Hair Centre is a national and worldwide leader in hair solutions, developed a customer satisfaction report in 2009 among its clientele to analyze areas where improvements could be made. This type of study, being developed for us by independent consultants, guarantees absolute objectivity in the results as well as the confidentiality of those surveyed under Data Protection Act 1998.

One of the main things about The Hair Centre that makes the company stand out is the promise to always offer the first consultation for free followed by a report on the conditon of the clients hair and scalp, a tangible extra that without a doubt also influences the level of customer satisfaction.

The results obtained from the analysis were outstanding. For example, 98 % of the customers were satisfied with their experience at The Hair Centre (95% of the women and 95% of the men). From this it can be deduced that these satisfied clients have improved their hair loss problems through specific hair treatments, such as using a trichological hair care program over  12 months, or in cases of advanced alopecia, resorting to a systems of hair replacement without surgery.

INVESTIGATE TO IMPROVE:

Why devise a satisfaction survey and report if we are already leaders in the market?  The answer is very simple: in order to continue offering the best possible service, it was necessary to discover areas where improvements could be made. In addition, it is of extreme importance to listen periodically to the preferences and concerns clients have in order to take the appropriate action. This is especially true when dealing with a subject like healthy hair and hair conditions of both men and women alike.

Once the objective of the study was defined, it was time to begin asking the clients.

HOW THE DATA WAS OBTAINED:

The study was drawn from a total of 338 interviews among clients from The Hair Centre in London. Last year the total interviews was 210.

The public surveyed were a perfect representation of The Hair Centre clientele. The sample was made up of a gender distribution of 38% males as opposed to 62% females. With regard to age groups, 10% were up to 30 years old, 39% between 31 and 40 years old, 26% older than 41 years old, and one fourth of the sample were above this age.

As with all statistical studies, the supervision of the data was of great importance in order to validate the information gathered. A group of customers were randomly selected to confirm that the data in their questionnaires was in fact true. One hour was allocated to each client per month for twelve months.

SATISFACTORY RESULTS:

And from the study to the conclusions – results notably demonstrate the value of the work developed by The Hair Centre to save the beauty and health of hair for hundreds of thousands of customers throughout Europe.

THE MAIN CONCLUSIONS:

97% of the clients have a good or very good overall level of satisfaction with regard to The Hair Centre services.

95% of the clients consider the attention received by the Trichologists to be good or very good.

On evaluating if the customer would recommend The Hair Centre within a scale of 1 to 10, an average high score was obtained 9.4.

Thyroid problems could and do cause hair loss

07.08.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS, HAIR LOSS FACTS

thyroid12

“I went to my doctor for hair loss. The doctor said I had a thyroid problem and gave me a prescription for methimazole. The hair thinning continued, and I read that this medicine can cause hair loss. I have stopped taking it. What can I do? I am 50 and a woman.” – G.J.

ANSWER: On average, people lose 100 hairs a day, and 200 on shampoo days. To be certain you are exceeding those numbers, collect the hair from your comb and brush every day and do so for two weeks to see what your count is. That will tell you if you truly have a problem.

Thyroid illnesses can cause hair loss. Your medicine was for an overactive thyroid gland. If there is solid laboratory evidence that your gland is putting out too much thyroid hormone, you had better go back on the medicine or seek an alternative treatment for it. An overactive gland can cause troubles greater than hair loss. Furthermore, although the medicine can cause hair loss, you might not have given it a long enough chance to work.

Stressful situations lead to hair loss. After having a baby, many women experience a tremendous loss of hair. The same can happen to people who have had an illness, particularly ones that cause fever. Such hair loss almost always reverses, given time.

One of the most common causes for female hair loss is the effect of male hormone on the hair follicle. Women do make male hormones. After menopause, when there is a drop in female hormone production, there is a relative increase in the amount of male hormone in a woman’s body. Just as it does in men, it can make hair follicles wither and die.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Stress can cause thinning hair

05.08.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

The New York Times recently reported that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s hair was thinning as a result of extreme stress. If so, doctors say, she’s not the only one.

stress

Dermatologists say that although life’s normal ups and downs aren’t enough to precipitate it, women can lose up to 50 percent of their hair after an unusually stressful event. Dr. Rebecca Euwer, a Dallas-based dermatologist, says that some of the more common causes are childbirth, surgery or a death in the family.

distress-woman

“When someone comes in and says they’re losing their hair, you ask, ‘Well, what happened about three months ago?”’ Euwer says.

This type of hair loss can occur both in men and women. But most of the known cases are reported by women.

Euwer says that hair goes through three phases: growing, resting and falling out.

About 90 percent of hair is in the growing phase. Most of the remaining hair is in the resting phase, where it remains for about three months. When people suffer physical or psychological trauma, it shocks the hair follicles into a resting phase.

People do not notice the effects until three months later, when it begins to fall out.

“About 1 percent of your hair is falling out, so it’s normal to lose about 100 hairs a day,” she says. But when you begin to notice more hair on your pillow or in your shower drain, it’s time to go to the doctor, she says.

The good news is, it will usually grow back on its own.

However, there’s a chance that women older than 30 could be experiencing the female equivalent of male-pattern baldness. Euwer said if this is the case, only hair on top of the head will thin. If it is stress-related, the sides and back of the scalp will also be affected.

Then there are women hit with the double-whammy: both stress-induced hair loss and natural thinning with age. In these cases, doctors might need to prescribe Rogaine, an over-the-counter hair regrowth treatment.

But Euwer says to use this with extreme caution. Some women have gotten more than they bargained for after using extra-strength Rogaine, which is intended for men.

“Women who get hold of that have gotten some on their forehead,” she says. “Then they have to go and get laser hair removal.”

Not all hair loss is stress- or age-related. Excessive styling or harsh treatments can also damage the hair, causing it to fall out. And a sudden loss of hair may signal a more serious condition, such as diabetes or lupus.

"Scalp Coolers" May Lessen Cancer Hair Loss.

31.07.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

After finding out you have cancer, how serious it is and how it may be treated, a common worry is the loss of hair. Hair is a big thing in our society and both men and women often put a lot of time and effort into how their hair looks. The loss of the hair almost seems like the final straw – an emotional hurt that takes a lot out of you.

There are ways that people cope, from buying a wardrobe of funky hats and colorful scarves to buying wigs of similar hair or something completely different. Others embrace their baldness and don’t cover up.

A new idea has come to market that, while maybe sounding a bit “out there,” seems to be helping patients who are losing their hair and studies are finding that it may have some benefit. Called a scalp cooler, the device does exactly what the name says. It cools down the scalp to try to help preserve the hair.

A study that was presented this year at the 2009 ASCO Annual Meeting (American Society of Clinical Oncology) found that this can be effective. Researchers looked at 120 women who were being treated with breast cancer. The chemotherapy regimen they were receiving was known to cause hair loss in most patients.

The women were divided into two groups, one group had the scalp cooler, the other didn’t. The women who used the scalp cooler wore it throughout the chemotherapy infusion and for 20 minutes before and 2 hours after.

According to the study findings:

61.7 % of patients in scalp cooling group had grade 4 [significant] hair loss compared to 81.7 % of patients in control group. After 6 cycles, 85% of patients in scalp cooling group experienced grade 4 hair loss compared to 100% of patients in the control group. Only 9 patients (15%) in the scalp cooling group developed grade 1-2 [minimal to moderate] hair loss.

The study authors concluded that the optimal effectiveness of the scalp cooler lies in the shorter dose regimens.
