More support urged over hair loss

Experts have called for more understanding of the psychological problems faced by men and women affected by hair loss.

A report commissioned by hair loss supplement company Viscera found that almost a third of people in the UK suffered from hair loss or had experienced it in the past.

While the majority of people were affected by male pattern baldness or hair thinning, around 2% of people suffered from alopecia.

Many of those with hair loss reported no emotional problems, but a “significant minority” of people were found to be at risk of serious psychosocial consequences, including depression, anxiety, lower self-esteem and identity change, according to the report’s author, health psychologist Dr Nigel Hunt.

He said: “While hair loss affects a quarter of the population, the psychosocial consequences are relatively unknown. This report looks beneath the surface to reveal the fundamental reasons why hair loss has such an impact on those who suffer and the extent to which it holds a negative perception in society.”

In the report, which coincides with Hair Loss Awareness month, Dr Hunt suggested people with the condition should be given more access to therapy to deal with the psychological issues associated with it.

The study, which questioned over 1,400 people found that a quarter of people with hair loss felt distressed when they looked in the mirror, 33% felt self-conscious, and almost 20% said they lacked confidence in social situations.

Those polled said the condition would have a “significant risk” of damaging relationships and worried their sexual attractiveness would decrease as a result of it.

The study also uncovered a perception that people with hair loss would face difficulties at work – 30% of those polled said women with hair loss could be discriminated against at work, whereas only 15% agreed men would be discriminated against.

Dr Hunt said: “This report provides help to develop understanding of the relatively uncharted psychosocial impact of the condition across the UK. It demonstrates that hair loss cannot be dismissed as a one-dimensional problem but is a serious issue that requires emotional support.”

The 4 Main Causes of Hair Loss

17.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

The precise conditions that produce hair loss typically have deeper causes. Science has revealed 4 factors to be especially important:

Genetic factors
As announced in 2008, scientists at Bonn and Düsseldorf Universities have discovered an important genetic variation leading to hair loss. Researchers investigated more than 500,000 positions in the human genome, establishing a gene variant which clearly occurs more frequently in men who are bald than in others. The breakthrough may help explain similarities in cranial hair growth between fathers and sons.
This work builds on that in 2005, which identified a separate hair loss gene inherited through the maternal line, explaining why hair loss in men often imitates that of their maternal grandfathers.

Hormonal factors
Imbalances in the male and female hormones that your body naturally produces may be a factor. Likewise, an overactive or underactive thyroid gland can lead to hair loss. Correcting such imbalances may stop your hair loss.

Ageing
Losing some of your hair is a totally normal part of the ageing process. Called androgenetic alopecia, this accounts for around 95% of all hair loss. Women usually experience the condition as an even loss of hair over the entire scalp, rather than areas of complete baldness.

Stress
Anxiety and other forms of stress can be major factors. For example, following a worrying illness or major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. Such symptoms are normally temporary and will reverse once you return to your normal state of mind.

Trichotillomania Is There An Answer?

16.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Trichotillomania is a compulsive urge to pull and/or twist of the hair until it breaks off, resulting in noticeable hair loss.  The hair may be lost in round patches or diffusely across the scalp.  It is a type of compulsive behaviour and its causes are not clearly understood, although symptoms usually begin before the age of 17, with women almost four times likely to be affected than men.  It may affect as much as 4% of the population.  The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer and permanently damaged if not treated.

Telogen Effluvium Is There An Answer?

16.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Telogen Effluvium occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal.  Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins.   When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is therefore diffuse thinning of the hair.

Make My Hair Grow (What's Normal Hair Loss And What's Not): The Hair Growth Cycle

14.04.2009 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, HAIR LOSS SCIENCE

Normal hair cycle is associated with the temporary loss of hair and the growth of new hair from the same follicles. The hair growth cycle in humans occurs in three phases:

hgc

Anagen-growth phase
Catagen-degradation phase
Telogen-resting phase

There is no break or discontinuity between phases; the hair cycle is a continuous process that occurs for the life of the hair follicle. A complete scalp hair cycle stretches over 2 to 8 years:

hgc1

Anagen (growth)-2 to 8 years
Catagen (degradation)-2 to 4 weeks
Telogen (rest)-2 to 4 months

The “dead” hair that was degraded during the catagen (degradation) phase is pushed out of the follicle when a new hair emerges in anagen (growth) phase. A healthy person with a full head of hair will shed on average 50 to 100 “dead” hairs per day. Shedding can be influenced by internal factors such as age, change in hormonal or nutritional status, skin disease and stress, and by external factors such as cancer chemotherapy, ionizing radiation, and exposure to some types of industrial chemicals.

All follicles, everywhere on the body, undergo hair cycle. The duration of each cycle may vary by body site; on the same person, scalp hair cycle may be slightly different in duration from body hair cycle.
