Female Hair Loss

21.04.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS, HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

Androgenetic alopecia in women or Female Hair Loss is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth, or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills.  The hair loss is generally more uniform over the scalp than in the male counterpart, but also results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone.  The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

AT THE START OF TREATMENT IN DECEMBER 2008 UP UNTIL APRIL 2009

This young woman is using the following treatments listed below:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser
This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair.  It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth.  It also contains a multi-vitamin complex to help catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerate growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.
Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.
Please note: As vasodilators are designed to dilate the capillary blood vessels the scalp may redden on the area where the stimulant is applied and may also tingle slightly for a while.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser
This stimulant contains a very effective, natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor.  It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.
Directions for use: One millilitre to be massaged into the scalp gently twice a day, morning and evening, and left on for at least 8 hours.

DID YOU KNOW?
Our  Hair Centre Treatment Programme (HCTP) has been designed by expert chemists and trichologist and is based on clinically proven results.

In fact, in clinical studies 9 out of 10 women with female pattern baldness kept their hair, whilst untreated women continued to lose their hair.

What’s more: 2 out of 3 women who stay on the Hair Centre Treatment Programme (HCTP) for long-term treatment will experience some re-growth of their hair.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Re-growing hair once it’s gone is much harder than conserving the hair you already have. For best results, act now!

Hair loss might be an inevitable part of your genetic make up, but baldness doesn’t have to be. The Hair Centre Treatment Programme (HCTP) can help you keep healthy hair.

Despite your odds of experiencing hair loss being relatively high, if you experience hair loss as a result of female pattern baldness, you can retain your hair and feel better about the way you look by joining The Hair Centre trichology-led, professional Hair Centre Treatment Programme (HCTP).

How to cope with women's hair loss

17.03.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

miriam-blueThe Daily Mirror’s expert on health, sex, relationships and family and author of more than 50 books.

Sigourney Weaver bravely had her head shaved for Alien 3, Demi Moore went bald for GI Jane and Natalie Portman dared to bare in V For Vendetta – but very few women would choose to lose their hair.

Men take it more in their stride. Harry Hill makes jokes about his baldness and actors Bruce Willis and Steve McFadden – Phil Mitchell in EastEnders – use it to enhance their tough-guy image.

But, for women, hair loss can be devastating. As a dermatologist, I saw hundreds of women who were losing their hair for all sorts of reasons from hormones to stress.

Sometimes it was curable, sometimes not. Then it became something they lived with and struggled to hide every day.

Some women, like TV presenter Gail Porter, have been determined to cope with it openly.

She lost her blonde hair as a result of the condition alopecia areata and explained: “Just because you lose your hair doesn’t mean to say that life is awful… It was easier than I thought to deal with – I thought it’s just another thing, get on with it, it’s just another part of the journey.”

Serious hair loss affects an estimated eight million women in UK, with many more suffering from more minor hair thinning.

FEMALE HAIR LOSS

10.03.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS

Telogen effluvium occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal.  Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins.   When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is therefore diffuse thinning of the hair.

Trichotillomania is a compulsive urge to pull and/or twist of the hair until it breaks off, resulting in noticeable hair loss.  The hair may be lost in round patches or diffusely across the scalp.  It is a type of compulsive behaviour and its causes are not clearly understood, although symptoms usually begin before the age of 17, with women almost four times likely to be affected than men.  It may affect as much as 4% of the population.  The action of pulling on the hair over a long period of time results in the gradual shrinking of the hair follicle and so the hairs produced become finer and finer and permanently damaged if not treated.
