This report, by Dr Nigel Hunt, of the University of Nottingham, says that more than 15 million adults in the UK, both male and female, will experience some kind of hair loss at some time in their lives. Women especially find it hard to deal with, since so much of their self-esteem is bound up in fantasies of thick, glossy locks. “The psychological impact of hair loss [on women] can be severe,” says Dr Hunt, “and can involve social phobia, lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression.”

Since 90 per cent of men say they do not view women with thin hair as attractive, you can understand the difficulties. Time and again in the study, women referred to their hair as their “crowning glory”, indicating that whatever else they might do to make themselves look nice – clothes, make-up, shoes – hair was the most crucial.

Nor is there an easy solution. Minoxidil works for some, but not for all. All I know after years of dealing with the problem is that, psychologically, there are bad months and better months. When it’s bad, there’s no shame in a headscarf. When it’s better, a sympathetic hairdresser makes all the difference.

I am a 32 year old woman suffering from thinning hair due to a hormonal imbalance. Is there anything I can do to restore my hair's original health and overall look?

It is quite common to have hair loss with a hormonal imbalance, but the degree would depend on what your hormone measurements are and how much they are affecting the hair follicles. It is possible to treat hormonal problems both internally and externally as far as hair is concerned, but not without prior blood tests. Also, it is possible that your hair thinning is due to other causes, too. For example: low iron levels, low ferritin (iron stores), thyroid anomalies, poor nutrition etc. It would be beneficial to have all these possibilities (and others) measured correctly before you embark only on a possible hormonal dysfunction. It is certainly possible to improve hair volume and appearance once the causes have been established.

Female Hair Loss: Fluctuating Hormones

Many women experience hair loss after having a baby.This is because the high levels of oestrogen present during pregnancy keep the follicles in their growth phase, so the hair that would normally shed during that period isn’t released. There can then be a sudden and distressing loss of hair around six weeks or so after the birth. This shedding can last for a few months, although the hair will grow back in time.

Good nutrition will help and the Pill can be beneficial too, especially those such as Dianette, which contain anti-androgens (antimale hormones). HRT often has a positive effect, but some of the drugs used may contribute to hair fall, so discuss what you are taking with your doctor. Thinning hair is often associated with polycystic ovary syndrome, which can be treated with drugs and a topical application of anti-androgens.

Female Hair Loss: Post Surgery Hair Loss. What Can I Do? [ A True Story ]

Apologies for the delay as I snapped my fibula a couple of months ago and have been off with surgery etc and have only just been set up with working from home until I go back in for more surgery in 4 weeks time.

In regards to my hair, I am not sure if it was from the shock of snapping my fibula, the surgery or drugs I was put on, but I am seriously losing my hair in bucket loads for the past month. It is coming out in chunks and is quite worrying. Especially the front of the hair as well is so thin now. I will have to organise for all the treatment to be sent over.

Could you please let me know the details and I will organise for payment?
Again apologies for the delay as the surgery etc has had to take priority of late.

You are suffering from effluvium – which literally means shedding. This can occur when there is some trauma and tissue reaction to surgery and in particular to general anesthesia medications that can cause the existing hair to be lost.

It would be very disconcerting to go through any surgery procedure only to have a high number of perfectly good hairs fall out through the process. This is what is taking place.

Efluvium usually affects the miniaturized hair nearing the end of their life span due to genetic thinning and is most likely to be shed at some point in the near future. Some healthy hair will be shed, but these should re-grow quite easily as you are using treatment (and have been for some time now). Effluvium is more common when a large surgical session are performed such a snapped fibula correction. I know that this huge shedding cycle can be minimized by utilizing the treatments that you are currently prescribed, before and after such a long and involved surgical procedure. There is no need to panic, because although the shedding cycle and sheer numbers of hairs coming out feels like bundles it will stop and no permanent damage or set back would have occurred because you are very good with and used sufficient treatment over a good period of time, so I know that your growth cycle is in a safe and protected zone due to your trichologically balanced course of treatments. Obviously, it is more important than ever to be extremely disciplined with your treatment regime over the coming 12 months in order to stage your already planned recovery. Your operation is a minor and temporary setback. Please treat it as that, as you will already see the shorter recovery hairs appearing (although prematurely) but that means we just have to push on with strengthening the hair back up quickly to its normal healthy size, sheen and texture.
